A couple months after that, Meryl and Marty looked super cozy together at the Golden Globes, and everyone noticed, such that Marty’s rep had to go to PEOPLE and tell everyone to knock that shipping nonsense off—they’re just friends. This week, Meryl and Marty were seen exiting Giorgio Baldi together in Santa Monica, which could very much be a couple of friends grabbing dinner, but it’s also not helping to stop the shipping.
People want this to happen because it makes sense. Meryl is beloved, Marty is beloved. He’s a widower, having lost his wife, Nancy Dolman, to cancer in 2010. Meryl is, as we now know, separated from her husband, Don Gummer. They’re of a certain age, the kids are out of the house, their careers are legendary—they deserve to have fun! The shipping is coming from a good place.
While there has been no (public) canoodling, and I generally don’t advocate for bothering celebrities with dumb fan sh-t, in this instance, I just want us all to step back and appreciate that everyone is rooting for a second chance love. TNT are giving us the crazy in love rom-com, but romance takes many forms, and life is long, and again, Meryl and Marty are beloved and people want to see them happy, and if they can be happy together…? They say they’re just friends, and friendship is its own reward. But now might also be a great time for a couple of celebrities to swoop in and give us a classic Nancy Meyers second chance rom-com.
