One way to approach this year’s Met Gala theme is to literally dress like a dandy, but another interpretation is to lean into “tailoring”. Some people chose to literally represent tailoring with garments referencing the production of clothing.

For instance, Walton Goggins wore a custom Thom Browne skirt suit that references pattern making:

Walton continuing to live his best celebrity life, we see. (Aimee Lou Wood was also there and said she “loved working with Walton”, take that for whatever it’s worth.)

In a similar vein, Jeremy Pope wore vintage Maison Margiela (styled by Law Roach), to reference dressmaking forms called “judies”.

Pope’s head styling is great, but the look is just slightly too plain for me. Rosalía also dressed to reference dress forms, and her look is more complete and more sculptural:

She is accompanied by designer Olivier Rousteing, the creative director of Balmain. Yes, he is carrying a Balmain-branded sewing machine. Jenna Ortega also wore Balmain, her gown is made of tape measures. Rousteing was feeling literal!

Demi Moore also went literal, dressing as an actual necktie (by Thom Browne).

It’s just fun, y’all. I giggle-clapped when I saw her dress, and then did it all over again when I realized it’s a f-cking NECKTIE turned into a DRESS. Fashion is fun, we’re all having fun here.

Having the most fun, though, is Janelle Monae who always, ALWAYS understands the assignment. She wore a suit within a suit, that is itself a deconstructed suit.

The look is a collaboration between Thom Browne and costume designer Paul Tazewell, who became the first Black man to be nominated for the Best Costume Design Oscar for West Side Story. Also, look close, the tiny clock on her monocle WORKS.
