Who was it who said “nothing breaks like a heart”? Oh yeah, Miley Cyrus. Well, today she’s singing a different, but similar tune, after calling it quits with Cody Simpson and dropping her new song “Midnight Sky.”
“I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone
I don't need to be loved by you
Fire in my lungs, can't bite the devil on my tongue
I don't need to be loved by you”
You only need a sampling of the lyrics to know it’s a breakup song, and what’s the best way to promote a breakup song? Yep. A few hours before the song’s release, Page Six reported Cyrus and Simpson’s whirlwind ten months of PDA and TikTok dances has come to an end. I hate to say it, but I think most of us knew this wasn’t going to last. From the moment they got together, people in my office were talking about how they felt bad for Cody because he looks so happy and she’s probably going to break his heart. At the moment, Miley says hearts aren’t broken. During an Instagram Live last night, she revealed they’re just taking some time apart.
“For right now, two halves can’t make a whole and we’re individually right now just working on ourselves … Don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re out hanging out or getting pizza... we’ve been friends for ten years and we continue to be friends.”

Cody also posted a screenshot of a FaceTime call with Miley on his Instagram story last night congratulating her on the new song and urging his followers to go cop it.
I would encourage the same, it’s a good song! (Lainey: Cody, both our Cody and the Simpson one, is…sigh… so young, so he won’t get this reference, but I love “Midnight Sky” for the nostalgia. It sounds like Pat Benatar with a heavy dose of Laura Branigan’s “Self Control”, a great place artistically for Miley to situate herself right now.)
But the song is actually not about Cody Simpson; it’s another record directed at Liam Hemsworth.
“See my lips on her mouth, everybody's talkin' now
Ooh, you know it's true
That I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone
I don't need to be loved by you”
See my lips on her mouth? We all remember the summer of Kaitlynn Carter. Photos of Miley kissing Kaitlynn on vacation in Lake Como came out essentially at exactly the same time we heard Miley and Liam were separating, and Kaitlynn and Brody Jenner had also just announced their split a week prior. Apparently the foursome were friends, double dates, the whole thing. Miley and Kaitlynn getting together was wild. I just wish this story went full Shania Twain, and Brody and Liam had paparazzi catch them making out.
So, promoting a breakup record with breakup news is great, but since the record is actually about your ex-husband, you’ve got to share some stories about him, right? That’s why Miley’s getting super candid on the Call Her Daddy podcast, out tonight. In the teaser, there are some tame admissions like she’s been in love three times, as well as some more eyebrow-raising confessions like the first time she ever hooked up with anyone it was with two girls… and they went past first base. But the real tease is when Miley admits she didn’t go all the way with a dude until she was 16, and she “ended up marrying the guy.”
