Millie Bobby Brown: the red dress on a farm
I posted about Millie Bobby Brown in today’s site open but that was just one part of her new British Vogue cover story and the tabloid bullsh-t she’s had to endure. One more note about that though before we get to the better details in the article – it was the Daily Mail that had the exclusive a few days ago about Millie filing a claim against David Harbour before filming began on the final season of Stranger Things. A bit of a headscratcher, right? Because if the scoop came from someone on MBB’s team, why would they leak it to a publication that has been so cruel to her? Something to think about.
Aside from Millie calling out the dicks at the Daily Mail, my other takeaway from the profile is that she lives in Atlanta… and the why of it. As famous as she is, basically the First Daughter of Netflix, she is not based in Hollywood or New York. Not even London. Millie Bobby Brown lives on a farm in Atlanta, Georgia. Because this is where she spent so much time filming Stranger Things. Remember, basically half her life. Her entire adolescence. She is 21 now, and a parent. This is where she’s raising her child.
“I grew up here, you know? This is the longest place I’ve been consecutively in my life because of Stranger Things. For me, this is my home.”
Millie’s fame has necessitated for her the need for familiarity. Atlanta is familiar, it’s her base. And while there is obviously a downside that accompanied her success from Stranger Things, perhaps this was one of the best consequences that came out of the decision to base the show’s production there (for whatever tax credit reasons), is that it gave her a safe place. Growing up in the spotlight in the age of social media is already dangerous. Growing up in the spotlight in the age of social media in Los Angeles could have been devastating.
Now… to that red sweater dress she’s wearing on the cover. It’s Alexander McQueen and it is THE DREAM.
It’s the thick yarn, the knots, but also that it holds the inverted tulip shape in the skirt – there are no dupes for this, at least not yet, probably not for a few weeks at least, if not longer. But a sweater dress is a fall staple, and I’ve been wearing so many of them on the show lately so if you’re looking for a sweater dress to take you from now until April, here are a few that I’ve been browsing and/or have already worn. (Yes....affiliate links coming at you here!)
I just said there are no true dupes for Millie’s McQueen but this Twinset dress with the open back is a distant upper middle class relative. And it’s a classic, if you take care of it, it’ll never go out of style. Not many sizes left though.
There’s a really special Max Mara sweater dress in cognac that’s also pretty special. It’s the colour and the padded sleeves for me, and I was surprised when I tried it that it wasn’t Sacai because this is so Sacai coded. On sale right now.
Related to a sweater dress is the sweatshirt dress – which, I know, can be a little more casual but not when there’s a tutu attached. And a bow. So any occasion where you’d want a sweater dress fits for this one too, and that’s why I’ve included it. Also I want it. It’s by Patou and it’s almost like it was designed for my specifications.
OK back to true sweater dresses though, how about a turtleneck sweater dress in cherry print?! And with bell sleeves! I wore the Bellamy Mini Dress recently for an interview, it popped so well on camera.
I also really tried on the Marion Sweater Dress and loved it but the it popped too much on camera – sometimes with certain prints there’s a blurring effect on TV – so I couldn’t wear it for the show. But if you’re not filming, this dress is really fun and comfortable.
Here’s another one I wore a few weeks ago – the SIMONMILLER Pip Poplin Combo Sweater Dress, preppy and feminine at the same time. I liked it so much I repeated it for three appearances.
If you don’t want the stripes but want to keep the sweater on top and the flirty skirt on the bottom, the Delphine Sweater Twofer Mini Dress is really pretty and looks great with almost any shoe. I wore it with sneakers.
And here’s one that’s currently hanging on my rack, we’re saving it for closer to the holidays and once you see it you’ll know why. Essentiel Antwerp Long-Sleeve Jacquard Sweater Mini Dress is holiday and après-ski. It’s SO cozy, when Simone our stylist showed it to me, I squealed, tried it on right away, and then wanted to take a nap.
Finally, if you’re looking for a basic sweater dress that’s great quality, feels good against your skin, with the perfect slouchy hang… guess what? Gap has one. I just bought the Oversized Turtleneck Mini Sweater Dress in off white/beige and it’s under $80 right now, a deal!

Now You See Me 3, aka Now You See Me, Now You Don’t, also premiered in London this week. Not surprisingly, I love what Rosamund Pike is wearing. Maybe slightly more surprising, I enjoyed this movie. It was a fun time – and I watched it by myself in a screening room. (GoFugYourself)

Prince Harry was in Toronto yesterday ahead of Remembrance meeting with Canada’s Reserve Forces. It was a quiet visit, there wasn’t a whole media frenzy, he spent time with the people he wanted to spend time with, and it looks like it was a smoothly coordinated trip. (Celebitchy)
Remember when Peter Kavinsky drove all the way across town to get Lara Jean a bottle of Yakult for the ski trip? Most of us growing up in the East Asian diaspora are familiar with Yakult. But I did not know about the tradition of the Yakult delivery woman. This article by Nina Li Coomes is a fascinating read (Eater).
