I don’t think I’ve ever picked Mindy Kaling for anything, but here she is, my best dressed of the Met Gala 2025. She obviously loved her look, too.

 

She wore custom Harbison Studio, referencing late 18th/early 19th century military style. The sash, the buttons, the lapels, it’s giving “revolution”, whether French or Haitian, take your pick. Do you hear the people sing?

 

Professor Monica Miller talks about the role of revolution and empire in early Black diasporic dandyism, and Mindy’s dress is a nod to those roots. The necktie is a subtle nod to more modern menswear, and the jewelry is A LOT, but it’s styled perfectly, especially how the brooches on the dress echo those in her hair. Plus, it’s tailored beautifully. From head to toe, this look is complete, I would change not one thing.
