Dear Gossips,

The Screen Actors Guild has cancelled their in-person nominations announcement today due to the fire situation in Los Angeles.

A statement was released late last night – per Deadline:

“In an abundance of caution for the safety of our presenters, guests, and staff, the live in-person 31st Annual SAG Awards nominations announcement has been cancelled due to the wildfires and adverse wind conditions in Los Angeles. Nominees will be unveiled [Wednesday 8 January] at 7:30am PT via press release and the SAG Awards website. We look forward to celebrating these incredible actors and their work at the SAG Awards ceremony on February 23. In the meantime, we urge everyone to stay safe, and thank you for your continued support.”

We here share the same sentiment – if you’re in the area, hope you’re OK and please stay safe.

As for the SAGs, they’re seen as a predictor of how the Oscars might go so we’re keeping a close watch on these nominations and, in particular, the ultra-competitive Best Actress race because it’s as tight as it’s ever been. The performances are impressive and the field is extensive, with at least seven or eight actresses in the mix and no clear frontrunner to win… which is why, it’s not really a snub for any one of them to be left off the list, given how strong the contenders are and how everyone’s been campaigning. And yet. And yet. That will definitely be the narrative if it’s a big name, like Angelina Jolie. I’ve been saying this since October when she attended a SAG screening and Q&A for Maria.

SAG membership does overlap with the Oscar Academy and she certainly had the support of the SAG members in attendance that night. But then again, well, in terms of the high school that is Hollywood, we already know that Angelina isn’t exactly the prom queen. I said all those years ago, Brad got Hollywood in the divorce. But also, while SAG membership overlaps with the Academy, so does BAFTA. And as Joanna reminded me yesterday, Angelina was NOT longlisted at the BAFTAs. Same goes for Tilda Swinton in Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door. Something to keep in mind for both of them as we get into the final weeks of the Oscar race and as we wait for today’s SAG announcement.

Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, is in much better position. She was in New York last night accepting the Best Actress Award from the National Board of Review in a gorgeous black Jean Paul Gaultier, going open back for the second time in a row – look at this beauty:

Seriously, she and Jason Bolden are on another level right now.

Nicole celebrated by raising “a glass of milk to all of the babygirls in the room.” Good girl indeed.

Yours in gossip,
