Earlier this week in the site open, I wrote about Kylie Minogue’s latest smash hit, “Padam Padam”, and how it’s basically taken over charts around the world and social media, across all demographics. It’s not just people who were listening to Kylie in the “Locomotion” days or just the people who were here first when “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” came out – the song is everywhere for everyone… including BBC Radio 1.

I say this because in my post the other day, I mentioned that despite the fact that “Padam Padam” is legit the song of the summer so far BBC Radio 1 did not have it on their playlist which is why people have been dragging them for weeks. That same day though…

Finally. It doesn’t make them look any better but they couldn’t risk looking worse. Because “Padam Padam” is only going to get bigger. This weekend is Pride in many cities – we’ll be hearing it all over the place. And that momentum will carry, especially since Kylie’s doing so much promotion. She’s been in NYC all week doing interviews, this morning she was on The Today Show. That, on top of the song playing in heavy rotation, it’s going to be reaching even more people. To the point that some are already talking about Grammy nominations.

It's early, I know. But that’s how popular the song is. “Padam Padam” is a queer anthem, it’s sex positive, it’s pure joy – and the way it’s exploded like this is kinda what music is supposed to be about: people are loving the way it makes them feel, so they’re sharing it with others, and those people are sharing it even more, to the point where it becomes a collective enjoyment, whether you’re by yourself or in a club or at a party…

Kylie has said, multiple times, that she never expected this would happen, but she also said that about “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” and she certainly didn’t know that that song would become, literally, the lasting all-time bop that it is. But when an artist keeps doing this, keeps hitting on a sound that lasts the way her songs have lasted, that’s no accident either. It’s the kind of music that Kylie connects with herself, first, and then it’s how she’s connected with her fans and the people who keep listening to what she wants to sing.
