Kate Hudson has now been nominated in the best actress category for a SAG, BAFTA, and Oscar for her performance in Song Sung Blue. She is not a favourite to win – right now Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner and if there’s a dark horse in the race it would be Rose Byrne – but her award season run is a good example of how effective campaigns can be, especially behind the scenes.

And hers started early, like from the beginning of September, during festival season, well before Song Sung Blue had even screened, her name was showing up on prediction lists. Also, she’s been in the game a long time, she knows almost everyone, and clearly the Hollywood community showed up for her in the votes. Not that she wasn’t good in the movie, but there were so many actresses in the field this year (like Tessa Thompson), all of them good in their movies, and I think we know by now that it takes more than a strong performance to push you over the line where nominations are concerned. That’s why they campaign, and that’s why we analyse and gossip about the campaigns, incessantly.

Kate has been in Paris for fashion week the last few days. No doubt she and her stylist, Sophie Lopez, have already been working on her upcoming red carpet appearances – all the award shows mentioned above, plus the Oscar nominees luncheon, and various other campaign and cocktail events. Kate wore Armani Privé to the Golden Globes, it was one of the most highly rated looks of the night.

Can’t say I was as excited about it as the rest of the internet was. It felt a bit safe, and in general I feel like her red carpet choices have been leaning safe, at least in comparison to her wardrobe at other events. Look at this jumpsuit from back in December.

It’s Stella McCartney, I love it on her – playful, slightly off-kilter, fun attitude. And as a nominee who is not running at the front of the pack, this is the time for imagination and risk, since the favourites usually have to keep it pretty conservative or at least classic since you need to preserve the potential win and the resulting photos for posterity. Curious to see what approach Kate and Sophie will take as we get closer to the big awards.

Also at Armani Privé, a rare-ish public appearance by Diane Kruger and Norman Reedus. They’ve been together for years now, at least a decade, which is when the rumours about them first started. It was mildly scandalous at the time because she was allegedly seen grinding on him at a dive bar in New York while still with Joshua Jackson. That was a long time ago, but for a while there the comments were a mess about these two, not just because of the assumed overlap between Josh and Norman but because Norman has some weird and stalkery fans from his Walking Dead days and they popped over their relationship. Not sure they’re over it yet but they’re probably less loud? Unless this joint appearance set them off again.
