Outfit of the Week: Charli XCX in autumn brown
Before Taylor Swift, there was Charli XCX. Kamala Harris + brat characterised the early days of the Vice President’s candidacy – a totally organic viral sensation originating from Charli’s spontaneous tweet: “kamala is brat”. MVP’s campaign immediately and astutely seized upon the moment on her social channels, and Gen Z responded so enthusiastically, it scared the sh-t out of MAGA.
The Harris campaign’s quick response to Charli’s endorsement is one of the best examples of how effectively they’ve been leveraging new media to engage younger voters. But it hasn’t just been advantageous for the Vice President, because Charli has also benefited from the exposure.
That’s not to say that brat wasn’t popular before that tweet – of course it was. But being associated with the US presidential election, though, what’s being called the most important American election in history, is next level, expanding brat summer to a whole other demographic or demographics, plural. And Charli is capitalising on that momentum as we enter a new season. Just announced this week, a full brat remix album with 16 new songs and a number of features, including Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, and more. Brat and It’s Completely Different drops October 11. She and Troye are also going on tour starting next week.
Charli’s not just doing music, though. It was also confirmed this week that she’s joined the cast of the film adaptation of 100 Nights of Hero and will co-star alongside Emma Corrin, Nicholas Galitzine, and Maika Monroe. This is basically the internet’s fantasy casting for anything. If ever there was a movie made for TikTok, it would be this one.
Here's Charlie last night at the H&M event in London wearing my favourite outfit of the week – because it’s so ON TIME. Dark brown monochrome, both 70s coded and modern, this is not so much the faux cozy vibes of annoying Christian Girl Autumn but rather “don’t come near me, it’s fall and I want to be alone”, which is much more the speed of autumn girls like me.
