Ah, the early 2000s. They gave us so much, like the Britney/Justin denim on denim moment that will live forever in infamy; “I don’t know her,” and this. Revisiting ‘00s celebrity drama is my favourite. Today’s moment in Gossip Nostalgia is brought to you by 2001’s seminal pop classic, Lady Marmalade. The ’01 version featured, of course, Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, Mya, Pink and Christina Aguilera.
At the time, it was no secret that Pink and Christina didn’t like each other. They fought over who got to sing the Lady Marmalade high notes, which is a battle many pop divas before them have faced (remember Whitney and Mariah on When You Believe?) but still hilarious. Like, we all know you can both sing. You’re both going to sound like Aretha Franklins next to Mya (bless her heart) so what’s the beef? If you go back and listen to the song, it seems like Christina eventually won the part with the higher notes but Pink has her diva moments too. I wanted to give this Girl Sh-t higher marks because at least it was over the work but nope, even in hindsight, this was dumb.
On Watch What Happens Live, Pink revisited the feud and revealed that Xtina tried to punch her in the face. Please watch Pink giggle through the story. The good sh-t starts at the 1:44 mark.
Now, I’m picturing Britney and Justin’s dance-off on one side of the club while Christina tries to swipe at Pink on the other. This is amazing. I LOVE that scrawny little Mickey Mouse Club Christina Aguilera thought she could physically step to Pink, and that Pink’s reaction was “what’s happening right now?” This is making my Friday.
Pink chalks up their Girl Sh-t to being young alphas who fell into petty drama.
“You have to learn -- women have to learn how to support each other. It's not taught to each other in the playground."
In 2001, the playground was the pop charts and Pink, Christina, Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson were pitted against each other for the title of reigning pop princess, a battle both Pink and Christina have admitted to wanting nothing to do with. So, it makes sense that they had their problems. Now, Pink says they’ve “hugged it out” and all is well. A WWHL caller asked when they’ll collaborate next and Pink teased that a new track is coming.
“We may or may not have already collaborated. I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, but I just did.”
I care more about this than I thought I would. Do you care?
I’ve now watched the Lady Marmalade video four times today so I’m going to leave you to do the same. You’re welcome.
