This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of The Crow, starring Brandon Lee. It was Brandon’s breakthrough role, and he was expected to go on to be a big star coming out of this film. Tragically that was not to be as he was killed on set.

The movie opened at #1 at the box office and has since become a cult favourite. So they’ve been trying to remake it or readapt it for years. Like years and years and years. So many actors have been attached or rumoured to be attached over the last two decades: Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, James McAvoy, Luke Evans, Nicholas Hoult; Tom Hardy and Jason Momoa came really close in 2017 before dropping out. But then, in 2022, Bill Skarsgård was confirmed with Rupert Sanders directing. And now we’re just a few months away from the premiere. The 2024 version of The Crow will come out in June and contend at the summer box office.

Vanity Fair has the exclusive first look at the film with Rupert describing it as a “dark romance”. It’s been years since I’ve seen the original and I was devastated by Brandon’s death (Bruce Lee is from Hong Kong, and if you’re from Hong Kong, as my family is, you know that he is even more iconic in HK than he is in the west so what happened to both him and his son was felt very deeply by HK people) so I don’t remember being all that horny about the movie. I mean, for sure, I was crushing hard on Brandon – he was so charismatic and SO beautiful – but it wasn’t like the feelings you get when you’re shipping a couple…

Which is what The Crow 2024 is giving, because this shot of Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs? It’s gonna be a problem for me. A horny problem.

Most of the online chatter today since Vanity Fair’s drop is a lot of cinephile bitching about whether or not this is the right look for the character, Eric Draven. But from the jump they’ve been saying that they weren’t ever going to remake the film in exactly the same way – the energy of the original should linger, of course, but this new version should be its own thing, have its own spirit and personality. Horny personality? I can’t be the only one picking up on this vibe. Give us a trailer, let’s see if it matches the mood of the photos.

Final question: why is Bill Skarsgård so… rare? I can’t find any new shots of him since, like, 2020? That will likely change after this movie comes out because the thirst is coming for Bill, I guarantee it.
