When last we heard from Gisele Bundchen, she had confirmed her pregnancy with hot martial artist Joaquim Valente. I have never had a strong opinion on Gisele, but the way she moved on from Tom Brady was a master class in picking up and peacing out. That man really f-cked around and found out.

Now, she’s entering a new phase with a new man and a new baby on the way.

Seeing these new photos of Gisele got me thinking about the joke that she’s a witch. She sidestepped the allegation in a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, saying, “If you want to call me a witch because I love astrology, I love crystals, I pray, I believe in the power of nature, then go ahead.”

That is exactly the kind of thing witches say. They’re a circumspect lot. They’re not actually out here like Rio Vidal and Agatha Harkness, cackling to the heavens, they’re careful, and wise. They know the conditions are always ripe for people to turn on a witch. But really, seeing these photos of Gisele reminded me of something she said in that same interview, a quote I liked and made note of, and one that popped into my head last night.

“No one is going to come save you. [….] Never give your power away to nobody. This is your life. This is your movie. You are the director on it.”

It’s easy to feel powerless right now. I do. I bet a lot of you do, too. To feel sad and discouraged and frustrated. I’m not going to tell you not to feel that way. I’m going to feel that way for a while, and maybe you will, too. But eventually I’ll be ready to fight again, to muster whatever power I can and direct where I can to make a difference, for myself, for my community, for the young women who will grow up with less rights than I did. I’m sad and I feel powerless today, but I hope by tomorrow I won’t.
