Sometimes, the early birds make the strongest impressions at the MET Gala. This year, that honour belongs to two of my favourites, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale. They were definitely the best-coiffed couple of the night, but, if you ask Bobby - they were simply "off to Applebee's for dinner!"
Except, there's no grease here.
Let's go back to the hair. And Rei Kawakubo. Who is not afraid of volume …and neither was Rose's hairstylist. When you're going for a look this full, and with this much bounce, you don't want the hair to go to waste. So, why not make it stand out with an on-theme, scarlet red cut-out Ralph Lauren dress?
In Lainey's words, the clothing part of this look is all-caps "TERRIBLE." Yes, in this room, it's almost safe, but it’s also leaps and bounds beyond the champagne Ralph Lauren dress Rose wore last year. Not quite a return to form to my best-dressed pick from 2015, but it's closer. Their chemistry is still there, too. And Rose's hair does not simply have bounce, it also looks light, airy and effortlessly chic - a great homage to Rei and her fresh, breezy vibe. It's Breathless Mahoney meets Gwen Stefani, but with a more enviable shape. It's also not too avant-garde that it will not translate when these photographs are used in future publications. It will still work, without being too "arty," while also paying service to the night's big theme. And doesn't Bobby look so youthful? I love watching how her hair moves, and how they reach for each other's hands before their date night. Bobby was just nominated for a Drama Desk award for his most recent off-Broadway play, The Hairy Ape. Like I wrote last year, having the MET Gala right before the Tony nominations makes for a great partnership in visibility, exposure and talent. Off-Broadway shows are not in contention, but they'll likely be attending the June show as presenters, having done so together for the past two years. Now that's another red carpet to look forward to.
