Ryan Gosling: Lightspeed indeed

PROGRAMMING NOTE REMINDER: we are dark tomorrow and Monday and returning to regular gossip schedule on Tuesday 2 September. 

When I posted back in January about the blockbuster news that Ryan Gosling was joining the Star Wars Universe, I called it “lightspeed” because the project, a standalone Star Wars story directed by Shawn Levy, had been in development with little movement since 2022. And now that Ryan was attached, they were talking about fast-tracking, to the point where they were aiming to start shooting in the fall. 

It's not even the fall yet, technically we are still in summer, and now production has started with more cast members announced including Amy Adams and Aaron Pierre. Also they released the first image of Ryan with young actor Flynn Gray from the set, it’s a HUGE opportunity for this kid. 

This is big industry news, and I’m sure the nerds are popping off about it too. But, again, to go back to what I was saying at the top of this post, this has come together really quickly. Like, they started shooting today in the UK. So if they can wrap it up by the end of the year and head into post, they are well on track to make the May 2027 release date.

What else happened today…

The trailer for All of You, the upcoming film starring Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots, co-written by Brett and he’s also a producer, dropped yesterday ahead of its premiere on September 26. Dustin Rowles points out in his article at Pajiba that this seems… familiar…and wonders if Brett ripped himself off. Maybe this story works better as a movie than a television series. (Pajiba)

By Tilda Swinton’s standards, what she wore to the Venice opening gala was pretty conservative. That said, the pieces are beautifully constructed. This is a little boring but it’s the highest quality. (Go Fug Yourself)

I wrote last Friday about the imminent changes that will be coming at Saturday Night Live and this week we’re starting to hear about them. Michael Longfellow is one of the cast members who won’t be returning and …I can’t say he was my favourite. I know a lot of people like him and not everyone has to be for everyone else, so while I obviously wish him well, I’m not bummed about this. I am, however, very, very, VERY bummed about Celeste Yim’s departure. I love their work. Celeste + Bowen is an all-time SNL partnership, in my opinion. Can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.
