A major announcement was made yesterday just ahead of the BAFTA TV Awards – after months of speculation, there’s officially a new Time Lord. Ncuti Gatwa has been confirmed as the new Doctor Who. And the timing could not have been better as Ncuti was at the BATFAs as a nominee for Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for his work in Sex Education and was a scheduled presenter. So they used that red carpet for mega publicity, as they should. You want the biggest platform for his news.
Ncuti was with Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies while doing press last night. They’ve been keeping this secret since February. Russell told the BBC that they actually thought they had their person when Ncuti came in to audition; he was the very last person to audition:
"It was our last audition. It was our very last one," the writer and producer said. "We thought we had someone, and then in he came and stole it. "I'm properly, properly thrilled. It's going to be a blazing future."
Ncuti is Scottish, 29 years old, born in Rwanda. He’s obviously super talented, and already very popular from Sex Education. So he’ll bring an entirely new energy to the character and he’ll open up the series to a younger audience. This is a win on every level.
Also…his outfit last night was a win on every level. And there’s no doubt there was thought and work put into it, knowing that the announcement would be made ahead of the event, knowing that these photographs would accompany the biggest achievement of his career so far, Ncuti came to play in an amazing fringed black jacket and repping Orange Culture Nigeria. SO good.
The future is here indeed.
