Fresh off her SAG win, Squid Game’s Hoyeon Jung has lined up her next project. She will be joining Cate Blanchett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Kevin Kline in Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming Apple TV+ series, Disclaimer. That is a lot of big names lined up in a row, and now the list includes Hoyeon. Blanchett stars as Catherine, a documentarian who starts reading a manuscript from a widower (Kline) which she is shocked to find details an event in her past she thought long buried. Hoyeon will play Kim, one of Catherine’s employees looking for her big break. Cuaron is writing and directing the series, adapting from Renee Knight’s best-selling novel of the same name.

I am SUPER interested to see what Cuaron does with Disclaimer, because this is a very popular book with a widely loathed ending. I’m sure there are people out there who like the ending, but I’ve never met one, and I am not one myself. (It’s because of books like Disclaimer I am often slow to read contemporary novels, everyone promises they’re sooooo good and then I drop everything to read it and it doesn’t live up to the hype.) But the basic premise IS good, with the mysterious manuscript and the Big Secret and the thrillery nature of the plot that lends itself well to cinema. I just wonder if Cuaron will try to “fix” the ending. Probably not, as Renee Knight is one of the executive producers, and it’s a rare writer who can truly take Hollywood’s money and run, and not try to “protect” their book in translation. Should be interesting to see how it all turns out, and in the meantime, I’m glad to see the cast of Squid Game just keeps winning.
