Lainey sent me these photos of Taron Egerton in character as Elton John on set of Rocketman and asked, “What happened to my hot dude?” Lainey can refer to Taron as hers because of that time he had a crush on her. Taron isn’t at his usual level of hotness dressed as 1970s Elton John but I’m still very into this whole aesthetic.
He looks SO MUCH like Elton John. The side-by-side pics are creeping me out. I own a pair of these round gold-rimmed glasses because they are back in style and I was too young (aka not born yet) to appreciate them the first time around. Have I mentioned I’m so young? Taron is 28 so he wasn’t alive for this era either but he’s rocking those sideburns like he was. I shouldn’t be turned on by this, should I?
When Taron was cast as Elton, Sarah wrote that he has the charm and vocal chops to pull off the tough task of playing one of the most prolific musicians of all time. And at least he can act, unlike Justin Timberlake.
According to The Daily Mail, the film will “follow Sir Elton's life his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through to his influential musical partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, played by Jamie Bell. It will document the life of the singer and songwriter from youth as a student to the start of his rock career in the 1970s and 80s.”
It will also address Elton’s drug and alcohol addictions. So far, we haven’t seen Taron in anything that requires this kind of range. If he pulls it off, are we having a different conversation about Taron come next May? Is it time for Serious Actor Taron, instead of just that charismatic kid in the Kingsman movies? If he’s bad, at least we’ll be distracted by his arms in that tank top.
