It really is giving 1989 right now.

1989 (Taylor’s Version) is coming in just over a month. I posted yesterday that Taylor’s been bringing back pieces from her closet from that album cycle but it’s also just, like, the general energy. The 1989 era was the time of the “squad”. For about two years there, that word was used and overused in the culture, to the point of exasperation, and closely associated with her – because she was always rolling deep with her crew, at award shows, at the parties, at the beach house, in her videos… the squad was squading and the squad gave good gossip, so much gossip.

The squad, of course, has changed. Membership has changed. If there is a Fourth of July party they don’t coordinate the photo dump on social media anymore. I don’t think we’re even supposed to call it a squad anymore. Still, over the last few weeks, we have seen Taylor’s friendships on display. Her friends have been going in and out of the studio with her all summer. Is Electric Lady the new Holiday House, her place on Rhode Island where all those infamous Independence Day parties took place? We’ve all seen the pap shots of her and her friends coming and going from Electric Lady Studios this year. We’ve also seen her out for dinner with regulars and newcomers the last few weeks. Zoë Kravitz and Blake Lively and Cara Delevingne and Selena Gomez. But also, last night, Greta Gerwig entered the chat.

Social media is going wild over these shots of Taylor and Greta, along with Zoë and Laura Dern, at Il Buco last night.

As you might expect, some of the reaction is hyperbolic:

Oscars and saving economies? It’s a win for white feminism!

As for the Taylor and Travis Kelce dating speculation, RA wrote to me yesterday and pointed out that Ryan Reynolds is now following Travis on Instagram so… ?
