Teyana Taylor received her first Oscar nomination yesterday for her performance as Perfidia Beverly Hills in One Battle After Another. She’s contending for Best Supporting Actress, and this is looking like an actual race between Teyana and Amy Madigan when, just before the holidays, it was thought that Teyana had a good chance for a nomination but not much momentum to actually win. The Golden Globes has changed the landscape though, setting up for some suspense on Oscar night, depending on how the SAGs and the BAFTAs go.

For now, though, as they say, let’s live in the moment – and the moment has been sweet for Teyana. Just this morning she posted her reaction video to her nomination:

It’s another example of why the Oscars continue to matter: because they matter to THEM, to the actors, the celebrities, and to those in the industry. Nobody’s popping off like this when they get nominated for a  Streamer Award.

Teyana’s work right now isn’t just about One Battle After Another and the Oscar, though. She is also promoting The Rip, which was released on Netflix last week and easily became the most watched film title on the platform. Teyana is great, as usual, in the movie. She’s not the main character but whenever she’s in a scene it’s that much more interesting – and every line of dialogue is believable, her delivery is always, always on point. Not just when she’s doing dramas and crime thrillers but also in comedy.

Teyana is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, right after the news about her nomination, so it works for her campaign but beyond the Oscars, it’s also a great opportunity to showcase that she has so much range. Here she is in a promo sketch with Ashley Padilla that turns into Waiting To Exhale. I was already all the way in on the way she says, “Are you humping the floor too hard” with the most hilariously serious concern. But then she goes full Bernadine and…it’s glorious.

Angela Bassett is in the comments giving her approval which is the ultimate compliment. Can’t wait to see what Teyana brings to the full episode. But her charm and charisma cannot be contained. She has so much star quality and it will be so fun, going forward, to continue seeing her showcase it in different creative genres. Also…the outfit here is SO good.
