Intro for October 7, 2026
Dear Gossips,
Ang Lee’s sumptuous 1995 film, Sense and Sensibility, is widely considered to be a gold standard for Jane Austen adaptations. As Sarah often says, though, every generation deserves their version of Austen – and they’re getting it this fall in theatres and on television. Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice is coming in December to keep us all cozy during the holidays and before that, Sense and Sensibility is the romantic counterprogramming option at the movies, opening on October 16, for all of us who don’t f-ck with Halloween.
A new trailer was released last week and it looks just as good as the first one. Only this time they’ve cleverly paired the visuals with a song most people are now well familiar with: Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need”. It worked on me. My heart swelled when the violins kick in – and as a girl who was shaped by the rom-coms of the 90s, I’m already conditioned to respond with big feelings whenever I see “Focus Features” and “Working Title” in the opening credits. If you know, you know.
With just over a week to go before the film opens, “Man I Need” is all over the marketing for Sense and Sensibility 2026. Several recent Instagram posts feature the track, including this one spotlighting George MacKay, our new Edward Ferrars, soon to be known, I guess, as the man Gen Z needs.
I’m not mad at it, I like George, he’s sweet and earnest and he’s about to blow up and I hope he and his wife are ready for it.
While we’re talking about the marketing though, just in case you missed another bit of cleverness from the publicity team – it’s their version of the Dune popcorn bucket … but make it a book stack! I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS.
They better f-cking have this in Toronto!
But I do have one hesitation about this film. Because while I can’t wait to hate John and Fanny Dashwood, I feel like I might have a hard time truly detesting John because he’s played by Tom Brooke who can also be seen as Coe in Slow Horses, one of my favourite series (and if you aren’t watching you are missing the good sh-t). I adore Coe and, well, again… if you know, you know.
Daisy Edgar-Jones was in LA last night promoting the film.
Yours in gossip,
Lainey
