Practical Magic Nostalgia
Let me make it about myself for a moment – what’s new – because I am stressing about Practical Magic 2. The movie comes out September 11… which is the first weekend of TIFF… so I’m working non-stop. There is no way I can go see it when it opens, wahhhhhhh!
The film is starting to screen for media though, ahead of the junket(s) that will be happening soon. I’ve heard from four colleagues who’ve seen it and the reaction has been largely positive which is encouraging. As Sarah has already noted from the teasers and trailers that have dropped, the rollout for this movie, the sequel to a beloved original, has been so promising. So now we’re all even more excited about the return of the Owens sisters.
Three generations of the Owens sisters were in London last night for the world premiere. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, looking incredible in navy, arrived first. Stockard has referred to herself as a “recluse”, she doesn’t do the celebrity thing anymore, so seeing her, and them, together, celebrating this movie, these characters, this story, is a win in and of itself.
Stockard spoke candidly recently about withdrawing from public life, happily, after losing her partner, Daniel Gillham. And on the withdrawing from public life part, not necessarily the happiness part, we could say the same about Sandra Bullock who also lost her partner. It has also been years since we’ve seen her at a premiere…
Which is why she’s a vision in Givenchy. A dress made for a comeback. After all, you don’t go with animal print and a bow on the hip if you’re doing it quietly. Interesting too that Sandra has changed stylists. For a long time she was working with Elizabeth Stewart, known for her work with Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, and Cate Blanchett, all Oscar winners like Sandy. But Cate and Elizabeth ended their style partnership at some point in the last year and now Sandy is with Leslie Fremar, best known for styling Charlize Theron.
This is their first major carpet, a huge success. Saffron jumped out!
Where there’s Sally, there has to be Gillian. Nicole Kidman wore Chanel, these two looks compliment each other well, and even their hair is similarly styled, though I think the humidity wasn’t working for Nicole’s wig.
That’s not really the point though. The point is the sisterhood, and how warm it feels even though the weather might be cooling, that after all these years, Sally and Gillian are back, as close as ever, in real life and onscreen… plus the glamour. Perfect song choice for this reel.
And then there’s the youngest generation of Owens sisters, played by Joey King and Maisie Williams. Maisie’s outfit, you will note, is a tribute to her character’s mom. It was inspired by Sandra’s look from the premiere of Forces of Nature in 1999.
This was Maisie’s stylist Dino Bonačić’s first ever premiere and he f-cking killed it.
Witch season is almost here!
