Timmy is still campaigning
In case you missed it, and how could you?!, WE HAVE AN OSCARS RACE, gossips! There are tight races across the board – in best picture, in both the supporting actor categories, and also in best actor now that Michael B Jordan is finalllyyy getting some respect for playing TWO distinctly different characters, Smoke and Stack, in Sinners.
MBJ’s campaign has been quiet and subtle. Other actors before him would have basically taken out full-page ads in the trades emphasising how much work he did on the film in both roles. By contrast, Michael’s campaign team hasn’t been so loud about it, though his co-stars, like Wunmi Mosaku have been talking about it whenever they get the chance. If there’s one group of voters who would and should appreciate the double that MBJ brought to his performance, though, it would be the actors, his peers, the people who truly understand the undertaking. And so, with less than two weeks to go before the Oscars, while Oscar voters are considering their ballots, the momentum right now is definitely with Michael B Jordan and not with Timothée Chalamet.
That said, we should (and Timmy definitely does) remember that Timmy won the SAG last year and did not win on Oscar night, when the Academy went with Adrien Brody. So it’s not like anyone should be giving up right now. For Oscar junkies like us, it’s a gift. Because it’s so much more fun when there’s suspense, when no one knows for sure.
Voting closes tomorrow, after which no doubt we’ll be getting those Anonymous Voter articles from The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets that traditionally publish those pieces. In the past, those voters, under the cloak of anonymity, have often been rather c-nty. But on that note, it’s funny that we don’t often go BACK to see how the anonymous voter voted and whether or not they hit. Which is what I’ve just done and that’s when I realised… The Hollywood Reporter’s anonymous voter appears to be the same person for the last three years. In 2023, 2024, and 2025 it’s been a “member of the Academy’s short films branch”. In two of those three years they voted for Colman Domingo, including last year. Needless to say, they were not in the majority, at least in the best actor category. Curious to see if THR goes back to this person again and where they land. For what it’s worth, they did not seem to be all that taken with Timmy’s performance in A Complete Unknown last year.
Speaking of Timmy, he’s still campaigning. On Monday night he and Kylie Jenner were hanging out with LeBron James for a screening and a podcast recording.
So it seems like Timmy’s campaigning on two fronts: for the Oscar but also to repeat as “White Boy of the Year”. I can’t decide which one he has a better chance at winning.
