The Times asked Victoria Beckham if she plans to retire and she said no, which is a very obvious answer. She’s in her 50s and her company is not a licensing deal, she actually runs it. Which is why it’s so shocking to me that the comments are filled with “retire from what? She doesn’t do anything!”.
This is so strange to me because no one would say that about Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop or Jessica Simpson or Jessica Alba. There really is some deeply embedded 30-year-old WAG bias here. And even then, she was a massive pop star! (OK maybe I’m a little heated because I got my VB x Gap anorak and it’s excellent.)
Nate Bargatze is a really popular standup comedian who is trying to become Walt Disney? It’s humbling to know there’s a whole other pop culture world out there I know nothing about.
The humiliation rituals Khloe Kardashian facilitates for this man should be studied in a lab. So we can develop a vaccine against it.
Everybody loves Ted Danson (much to Larry David’s chagrin) and he has a sitcom on Netflix, Man on the Inside, about working as a PI at a retirement community. He’s also signed on to work with Elizabeth Banks on an Apple TV project about a “recent divorcee managing her father’s retirement home hookups.” Two doesn’t make a trend but Netflix also has The Boroughs, a sci-fi thriller set in a New Mexico retirement community, which is picking up some buzz. Ageism on TV has been studied (this report from Geena Davis Institute has some really interesting stats, but is a bit dated) and to put it in plain terms, older people are underrepresented, older women are really underrepresented and seniors are often portrayed as comedic foils (forgetful and fumbling) or villains. There are specific shows totally against that grain, like Hacks, and Elizabeth Perkins recently spoke about it in an interview with Woman’s World Magazine.
The girls were out for Longchamp last night (in-store events are so back). I love Emma Roberts’s skirt.
Gayle King’s appearance on Call Her Daddy is making headlines because she talked about catching her ex-husband with her friend (nasty business!). The thing about Gayle is she’s a really great interviewer and that’s what makes her such a great interviewee. The whole time she’s guiding the conversation but not controlling it. She has great flow.
