Dear Gossips,

Leonardo DiCaprio will celebrate his 50th birthday next month on November 11. Last night he received an early birthday present from Victoria’s Secret as they put on his favourite event for the first time in six years. Unclear if Leo was actually at the show, but he was seen this past weekend in New York with girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti who walked the runway last night.

She has a photo of him – from when he was much younger – on the back of her phone.

At 26 years old, Vittoria was among the younger models featured last night as VS brought back a full lineup of the legacy models who were regulars on their runway at the height of the popularity of this event. This is what most people were excited about, the Y2K of it all, with Tyra Banks closing the show and still serving after all these years.

No matter what you thought of the spectacle, and as tired and cringy as those wings looked, it was an expensive event. The production and marketing, the scale of it, and it was streamed on YouTube which means they don’t have broadcast money like they used to, and of course paying these top models for their time and clout – Victoria’s Secret is making a big push for a return to relevance.

Which is why I laughed at the start of Lisa’s performance (not at her, calm down Blinks, let me get to the point) because after she rocks up on a motorbike, you can hear the first bars of Tame Impala’s “New Person, Same Old Mistakes”, which she samples in her song “Rockstar”. But “New Person, Same Old Mistakes” of course is most closely associated with Rihanna who covered it on ANTI, the woman who made Victoria Secret look so old and dusty.

That’s not Lisa’s problem, obviously. There were no problems with Lisa last night. All three of the performers killed it. Lisa was followed by Tyla and then, the legend herself, Cher. Lisa actually came out twice – at the start of the show and then in the second half. For me it was her opening performance that really showcased her star quality. Lisa’s stage presence is electrifying.

It’s not just the walk, although that’s a killer f-cking strut. And it’s not just her dance ability, although she’s a wonderful dancer. With Lisa it’s all about charisma – her expressions, her camera awareness. At the 30 second mark of the video below, when she turns around and starts stomping towards the camera, shakes out her hair, then lifts her arms in a shimmy with the widest smile on her face the exact moment when the camera pushes in on her…

This is magic! You can’t take your eyes off her.

But BLACKPINK was repping on two coasts last night. With Lisa in New York, Jennie was onstage in LA for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! It was her solo US television debut.

The nostalgia is strong. The K-pop is also strong.

Yours in gossip,

Lainey
