Emma Stone: The Catch & Carryover Denim

As I wrote back in June when Ashley Padilla was named to the cast, I am 100% all in on The Catch, an upcoming rom-com starring Emma Stone and Chris Pine. Like, I can declare confidently, even though it just started production a couple of weeks ago, that for me, the movie is at least a lead-off double. The casting is perfect – Emma Stone and Chris Pine? That is correct. The premise is perfect – Emma plays the “most hated woman in baseball”, something about f-cking up a baseball game (by catching the ball?), and that, too, is correct. I could picture it before it even happened. And also, the industry description: Bull Durham meets Notting Hill? I’m telling you, you can’t go wrong. Not even worried about a jinx here.

Speaking of Bull Durham, though… Tim Robbins is in this movie! That makes it even more of a sure thing. Maybe I should adjust my prediction and say it’s a lead-off triple.

Tim was seen on set with Emma and Ashley earlier this week. Can we also count on a reference to Crash Davis? IYKYK. It seems pretty obvious.

The Catch is being directed by Dave McCary, Emma’s husband, scheduled for release the third week of May 2027 which is prime box office positioning. They’re targeting the Devil Wears Prada audience – and this is encouraging, that for the second year in a row, there will be a major motion picture release at the beginning of the summer box office made for that demographic. It used to happen all the time and then it stopped happening entirely. Hopefully studios are realising that they were leaving money on the table and there won’t be another drought.

As for Emma, she was the one who pushed this over the line. Once she confirmed that this would be her next project, reportedly several A-list actors wanted in, and the rest of it came together quickly. That’s how much clout she carries now.

Let’s talk about her costume and what it might say about the story. She has a ballcap attached to her bag, the New York Mets. So, her character is a Mets fan. Does that mean Chris Pine is a Mets pitcher? And is this a spring or a fall outfit? My first instinct is fall, which would put the Mets in contention for the playoffs and, frankly, if the #1 actor on the call sheet is repping the team, the Mets would probably have to be in contention in the movie, non? That alone is a conversation. But probably a premature one. We still have nine months to go before this film opens – and I’m obviously impatient about it.

So, we’ll move on to her jeans…because I really like the fit of them. They’re almost the 90s jeans that have been trending all year and that I’ve been recommending all season but slightly more tapered at the bottom and a bit shorter, landing just below the ankle. The reason I’m so locked into them is because I just bought a similar pair and I’m obsessed with them – these will be my carryover denim, the denim you bridge from summer deep into the fall.

They’re Gap Mid Rise Straight Taper in colour destroy medium wash. It’s where they sit on the hips, so good I might get them in another colourway – the bamboo green.

Right now, there’s a lot of carryover denim in my personal closet and my rack at work. These are pieces that will work for at least the next three or four months, and you also have the option of layering.

Like the We The Free Margarita Jumpsuit - the denim is so soft, it’s casual but it’s funky, I have it in everglades green and it works with combat boots but also, surprisingly, with a feminine heel.

The Sierra Long-Sleeve Hoodie Jumpsuit at Grant & Mercer in Toronto is also really good and on mega sale right now. The hood is the main character here and it fits longer than the one above, but you could also probably take this well into winter, too.

Denim skirts are also good to carry over from summer into fall. I just bought the first denim skort I’ve ever owned for golf, but I’ll also be wearing it under a sweater and over a pair of tights when it gets cold. Gap’s High Rise Mini Utility Skort comes in three colourways, I have it in wicker, and it’s currently under $80 with (at least at the time of writing) 40% off at checkout which is probably why it’s going so fast. While we’re here at Gap though, let me put you onto another skort that isn’t denim but it’s a great staple to have in your fall closet. I tried this on for work a couple of weeks ago and it’s a keeper: Gap’s Pleated Mini Skort in three colourways but the brown plaid is best. It falls nicely from the waist and is great for the office, under a sweater or a blazer or underneath a crisp shirt. Plus, it will never go out of style.

From skirts to dresses…there’s a denim dress that’s been in my closet at work for six months, I’ve worn it several times, so much that we kept it because it’s just that versatile, carrying over from spring to summer to the fall, easily. The Free People Harlow Mini Dress is pretty much the perfect denim t-shirt dress. It’s exactly the right A-line, exactly the right length. And that’s why there are so few sizes left, sorry. This has been one of their more popular pieces.

The Claremont Dress by Show Me Your Mumu is very close, though. In fact, some people might prefer it because it’s A-line but falls slightly closer to the body.

The Alexander Wang Boxy Denim Shirtdress also works, with buttons. I wore this a couple of months ago, and I loved how roomy and short it is. On sale right now, 50% off. 

If a baggy-ish shirt dress is not your thing and you prefer a fit and flare to carry over from summer to fall, the Short Flared Denim Dress from Maje is textbook, classic fit and flare but make it denim. I tried this on one size up so that I could throw a white collared shirt underneath and it’s definitely a September vibe.

Next – a two piece with the energy of a dress. The Steve Madden Rhode Denim Shirt Jacket is swingy and wide sleeved and comes with a matching denim tennis skirt – both are on sale, you can get the set for under $200 and wear them separately with so many different things, carrying over to the next season. This outfit has been one of my favourite things to bop around in all summer and it will definitely be in play in the fall.

And of course, you can always carry over a denim jacket from air conditioning in the summer to the fall and even, in some places, the winter, depending on how you layer. There’s a denim jacket on my rack right now that I can’t wait to wear, maybe during the festival. The We The Free Heart Land Cozy Denim Cropped Jacket is 90s coded, boxy, and an extra wide collar. I want to wear it with everything.
