Friday Keanu
Ah, now it is time to bless the feed with some Keanu. A perfect little Friday treat before the weekend, Keanu Reeves popped up in Milan, where he is on tour with his band, Dogstar. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen Keanu, though I heard him (briefly) in Toy Story 5 as Canadian stunt toy Duke Caboom.
Seeing Keanu did get me wondering what he’s up to, movie-wise, which is that he’s always got a million projects in development, but one film he’s already made that I am super looking forward to is Ruben Östlund’s new film, The Entertainment System Is Down. Östlund is the director of Force Majeure, The Square, and Triangle of Sadness. The Entertainment System Is Down is his follow-up to Triangle of Sadness, and seems to have a similar theme of how do people behave when a vacation goes to sh-t.
The Entertainment System Is Down is about the passengers on a long-haul flight and what happens when, well, the entertainment system goes down and there is nothing to distract them from each other. Besides Keanu, the films stars Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, and Nicholas Braun. It shot last year, though Östlund and Braun did some additional photography earlier this summer.
Earlier this year, Östlund said he doesn’t expect the film to be ready before the end of 2026, so I doubt we see this one during the fall festivals, but that is quite a cast and a premise, and I am very much looking forward to The Entertainment System Is Down in 2027. Though I can definitely do without the airplane equivalent of Triangle of Sadness’s ship poop sequence.
Also, if you’re looking for film recommendations but you sometimes think your algorithm hates you, Östlund co-founded a Swedish website called MyList where people can curate lists of film recommendations, like Letterboxd without the social media competition. The lists are things like “181 movies I honestly think you should see before you die” from Swedish TV host Emma Gray Munthe, or Sean Baker’s collection “Sean Baker’s heroin films”, which his curation of films about heroin addiction, in relation to his own experience of it. A lot of the users are in the arts and entertainment, but it does seem to be expanding out to more normies being included.
Yes, the site is in Swedish by default, but there is an English translate button at the very bottom of the page. MyList is an absolute treasure trove of films to discover. And yes, Keanu has a profile and his “5 best movies” are listed. I won’t spoil it, but never forget that Keanu really loves and watches movies, but he is also very Gen X. His “5 best” is surprising but also very Gen X.
