The dinner party is a fun game – coming up with your dream dinner party guest list and it probably changes from conversation to conversation, right? I never thought I would say this but then again, I never thought it would be possible in real life; and since it is actually real life and not imagined, more than ever I wish I could have been there, and I hope that this is something that will be shared at some point.

The Weeknd is still on his After Hours Til Dawn tour, currently in its fourth year (!). South East Asia is the final region, and he’s been in Hong Kong this week ahead of four shows at Kai Tak Stadium before heading to Kuala Lumpur where the tour will finally conclude in November. Four shows is the most number of concerts he’s performed in one location on this leg – so Abel digs HK and HK clearly digs Abel. While in HK, Abel met up with the most Hong Kong of Hong Kong acting legends, the king of eye acting himself, Tony Leung. This went immediately viral a few days ago because it was the matchup no one would have predicted or expected.

Those photos were shared by Tony’s wife, a star herself, Carina Lau who maintains an active social media presence. Otherwise we would basically never see Tony if he’s not in a film – and he does fewer and fewer of them, by choice. She posted another video of Tony and Abel to her stories today and this too is blowing up.

Excellent song choice, Faye Wong’s “Dream Lover”, the Cantonese cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams”. Faye’s version is featured in Wong Kar Wai’s Chungking Express, considered by many cinephiles to be one of the best films of all time and certainly one of the most defining films of the last 50 years in Hong Kong cinema. As a self-described cinephile himself, The Weeknd would most certainly have seen most if not all Tony and Kar Wai’s collaborations and meeting Tony would be meeting any idol, as it would be for anyone who loves film.

Tony said this summer that he has three projects in development – two films and one television series. The TV project is most notable because he hasn’t done a television series since 1989 in Hong Kong. There’s been no additional information about what this is except for the fact that he’ll be playing a serial killer and that it’s six episodes.

Six episodes is highly unusual in East Asian television. Chinese dramas, whether it’s Hong Kong or the mainland are typically longer than Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, and Thai dramas but even then the shortest is usually eight episodes. I’m wondering whether or not Tony might be working on with a western production team on this serial killer project – there’s been no shortage of western creatives who’ve wanted to work with him… including probably The Weeknd. I just jumpscared myself.

I am so curious about their dinner conversation though from that video that Carina posted. Neither of them look like they’re mic’ed so I’m not sure this is a teaser, probably just a flex, using a great lens, of two people riffing over a meal and definitely ranking as a dream dinner party guest list.
