Cruise: Mission: ARMY
Tom Cruise is currently in London. He did press junkets for Mission: Impossible all weekend and he’s receiving the BFI Fellowship from the British Film Institute today which is where he was “in conversation” last night.
He also screened the movie there – and repeated the thing he keeps saying over and over again: “I’m here to entertain you”, or variations of it.
He was joined at BFI yesterday by Christopher McQuarrie, Edgar Wright, and also Glen Powell who are currently in post-production on The Running Man. It was revealed recently that Tom gave Glen advice on the movie, specifically about running. I mean… if he’s going to give advice about anything, it would be running, wouldn’t it? Last summer Tom helped Glen promote Twisters, showing up to one of the screenings. Glen’s not going to let a favour go unpaid by his mentor. Tom’s also making headlines for his cover interview with Sight and Sound magazine because he mentions Nicole Kidman and working together on Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.
The Nicole part isn’t, at least to me, the most interesting part of what he says. See if you can pick out what sent me…
“It was a great experience. I was very excited to do it. I knew Stanley’s movies very well and I was introduced to him through Sydney Pollack. So Stanley called Sydney ’cause he wanted me to make a movie. He sent me a fax. I flew out to his house and I landed in his backyard. I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. I spoke to Scorsese about him and Sydney Pollack… so I knew what he did and how he worked. Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other. And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because obviously she’s a great actress.” (via Deadline)
Can you spot it?
“I flew out to his house and landed in his backyard.” I am cryinnggg. Like he felt the need to let us know that he arrived to Kubrick’s house by helicopter, OK Tom!
Anyway, the news about Tom that I’m personally most excited about though is coming out of Korea. I wondered last week when he was there whether or not he’d have time in the schedule to do another variety show – and it turns out he did. K-media is reporting that Tom filmed an appearance on RUN JIN, which is a spinoff of RUN BTS, BTS’s variety show.
Among all members of BTS, Jin is most suited to being on and/or hosting the variety format. He’s hilarious, he’s spontaneous, he’s chaotic. Some of the games (all of the games, who am I kidding) are stupid and silly, which brings out the stupidity and silliness in his guests – in the best way. I just watched one a couple of weeks ago when Jin had Park Hyung-sik on, one of my favourite actors and OMG he’s so hot. Start at the 17 minute mark of this video and watch two minutes and you’ll get an idea of the kind of television we’re dealing with here – it’s ridiculous and ridiculously entertaining and…
What will Jin ask Tom Cruise to do?!
But also, strategically, like from a marketing perspective, this is really, really smart of Tom and the Mission: Impossible team. Because they’ve now just engaged BTS ARMY for promotion. This episode will pop off when it airs, it doesn’t matter what actually happens, because ARMY amplifies everything that BTS does anyway. But if it’s funny, like if this is any good and Jin manages to bring out a goofy side of Tom that endears him to that fanbase? Look out.
Oh and by the way, Jin seems to have willed this to happen because years ago, on James Corden, he placed his photo next to Tom’s, and look at him now.
