Happy and Benito
Happy Gilmore 2 premiered in New York last night, probably the only movie premiere where Adam Sandler’s standard uniform fits the vibe because, of course, he’s always wearing something that looks like it came out of Happy’s closet.
The original is a classic, a project that contributed to Adam Sandler’s asking rate. It’s not just that so many people saw it, it’s that people watch it over and over again. This is one of the prerequisites for movies that hit the way Happy hit – you can recite the lines over and over again. “I eat pieces of sh-t like you for breakfast! You eat sh-t for breakfast?” “It’s all in the hips.” “The price is wrong, bitch!”
I loved Happy Gilmore before I even touched a golf club. Now that I play golf, obsessively, I appreciate new things about it all the time. Like this scene.
Sorry, but I’m about to go super nerd here – it’s when Happy is screaming, “You f-cking play it where it lies!”
Because so many people out here golfing do NOT f-cking play it where it lies. If it’s in the reeds, they’ll take it out of the reeds without counting a penalty stroke. If it’s in the rough, they’ll nudge it into a fluffier spot. If it’s in the fairway in a divot, they’ll move it an inch so that the shot is easier. But at the end of the round, they’ll tell you they shot an 82. Please. An 82 is not an 82 if you were hitting all your balls with a Kardashian filter, as if. Happy knew what he was talking about. He may not have handled it the right way, but he was right about this point.
Will Adam and his team get it right with the sequel? I mean, I doubt it if the trailer is anything to go by which just looks like a money-grab rehash of the first movie without Carl Weathers. That doesn’t mean, however, that I won’t watch. Of course I’m watching. And there’s a bonus: Bad Bunny.
Benito plays Oscar, the caddy. And we already know he can do comedy from SNL. I can’t wait to see him in this and in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing next month. Look at how cute and excited he is to be in this movie. Whatever issues there are with Happy Gilmore 2, it’s not going to be Benito.
