In keeping with Friday Funday, Philomena Cunk is BACK. Cunk is the clueless creation of comedian Diane Morgan, originally featured in Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe on the BBC before getting her own spin-off series, Cunk on Britain (which is available on Youtube).

Philomena Cunk is earnest and miseducated on most topics. She’s delightfully daffy and committed to spreading half-assed information. She also occasionally drops bars like this:

Cunk on Earth

Now, Cunk is back to take on the movies in Cunk on Cinema, coming to Netflix on November 15. Ah, just in time for holiday movie season! The trailer dropped yesterday and is predictably hilarious. Philomena Cunk wandering through Hollywood, interviewing the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Bay—who, it should be known, is capable of being a good sport when he wants to be—plus dunking on podcast bros, what more is there to want?

I love Cunk for the same reasons I love Abigail’s Divine Comedy, it’s the combination of absurdity and straight-faced commitment to the bit. Nothing makes me laugh harder than Philomena Cunk asking an actual subject matter expert a completely ridiculous question (like which is better, the Renaissance or Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”) or gravely dunking on the entire intellectual concept of philosophy, which is a running gag of hers.

I love Philomena Cunk. I love that Cunk is coming for the movies. I do get the sense that, not unlike Zach Galifianakis and Between Two Ferns, people are playing along with the bit more now than they did in the beginning—especially in America, where Cunk’s accent probably convinces a lot of people she is a real documentarian and not a character—but so far, that hasn’t ruined the magic of Cunk. I hope it never does. I hope every few years Philomena Cunk pops out to shed the most unhelpful light on interesting topics around the world.
