The Night of the Galas continues, as there was yet another gala in New York last night, this one for the American Ballet Theater’s “Angels and Demons” Gala honoring Cynthia Erivo. What was in the air last night that there was a gala on every block in New York City? Everyone was just going to galas.

Cynthia was there, of course, as the honoree, looking like she was having fun:

And there were dancers, of course, including probably the two highest profile ballerinas in the US at the moment, Tiler Peck (the first woman to hold a choreography title with the New York City Ballet, and also Olivia Rodrigo’s choreographer for “Stupid Song”), and Misty Copeland. But the person stealing all the headlines was Katie Holmes, who showed up with her new beau, artist Jason Bard Yarmosky. She looks very into him.

The green dress is not doing a lot for me, but it is rare that I like Katie Holmes’ fashion. But it is nice to see her looking so happy. Also, her film with Joshua Jackson, Happy Hours, premiered to mixed reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier in the summer. It received mixed reviews and does not have a release date yet. Hm. No matter the critical reception, you cannot tell me there is not an audience for a Joey/Pacey reunion rom-com. The whole industry is in flux right now, but the marketing departments seem to have lost their way, too. That should be a no-brainer to market to Millennial women.

What else happened today…

I will NEVER admit I was wrong about peas! Peas are disgusting! Peas ruin everything! They have a bad mouthfeel! If you’re “fibermaxxing”—can we stop adding “maxxing” to everything now?—there are plenty of other green veg that aren’t f-cking nasty to get your fiber in. I’m a high-fiber girlie and have been since college (part of my disordered eating journey involved focusing not on decreasing calories and fat but on increasing things like fiber and calcium intake), and I have managed a high-fiber diet for over twenty years without peas. Spinach! Broccoli and broccolini! Brussel sprouts! Kale! Which is gross but still better than f-cking peas! There are other options! Do not give into pea propaganda! Peapaganda! (Popsugar)

Valentina Pinault was voted Tatler’s #1 most influential nepo baby. On net worth alone, that sounds correct. It’s still always Paris Jackson for me. She’s so stylish. (Celebitchy)

I have a strange Halloween tradition in which I revisit the story of “the night of the grizzlies”, in which two different grizzly bears maimed and/or killed two different groups of hikers in Glacier National Park in Montana in 1967. PBS has a good documentary about it, and Smithsonian Magazine has a good article, too.

It’s a real-life horror story, from a time when people thought grizzlies were mostly harmless mascots of the national parks and not what they really are—land sharks, among the most dangerous predators on Earth. The night of the grizzlies changed how the national parks manage wildlife and human intrusion in wild spaces, which involved cleaning up the parks (the bears were coming far too close to people to eat from overflowing trash bins). It is a really scary story, haunting, even, and one I revisit every Halloween. For all the myths and folklore that we’ve invented, Mother Nature remains undefeated as the scariest of them all.
