Back in 1995, Mariah Carey secretly recorded a grunge album, Someone’s Ugly Daughter, under the band name Chick. At the time, her label would not let her release it and she spent the next 20 years hinting at its existence, finally confirming many of the details in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

This weekend, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Glitter, Mimi did an Ask Me Anything on Reddit and one of the questions was about her grunge project, whether or not she’ll ever share it, and she was pretty obvious in her response: “my answer is…#notyet (this is a hint!)”

“Not yet” of course is what she always says up to Halloween, and the “not yet” is inevitably followed by…

It’s time!

Our Christmas Angel has awakened from her slumber, the holiday season has officially started. And this year she kicked it off with a throwback, in Halloween glitter grunge before transitioning to Christmas glitter glam.

Perfect, no notes.

Does that mean that the Christmas gift she’s giving us this year will be Someone’s Ugly Daughter? Nothing is impossible during Mimi’s time of year but her focus, always, during the holidays is “All I Want For Christmas… Is You” and how many times she can get that track to #1. It’s impossible to overstate the significance of this song, a pop song that became THE Christmas song of the modern era, which means it’s immortal. Which might not ever happen again. A new Christmas song that everyyyyone knows? That might be the most ultimate pop culture challenge, a million times more difficult than EGOT.
