Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence: Festivals later, maybe
I’ve been talking about the Cannes Film Festival this week and today the almost-complete lineup was announced. As previously noted, this year seemed particularly competitive, with Cannes coming off the success of 2024 (it’s always bragging rights when the Palme d’Or winner goes on to win the Best Picture Oscar and other festival premieres are nominated), apparently they screened over 2909 submissions…
So there was bound to be exclusions. Kristen Stewart’s feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water, did not make the cut, at least not so far as there may be late additions. Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson’s films, however, also their first features, were on the list. Should KStew not end up getting chosen by Cannes, though, there’s still Venice, TIFF, and Telluride…
And that’s also where we might see Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone. Jennifer stars in Lynne Ramsay’s highly anticipated Die, My Love, with Robert Pattinson. For months now it was prematurely assumed that Lynne’s latest work would be heading to the Croisette because all of her films have screened there. Die, My Love was not included in the announcement because she’s still editing. Some are leaving room for it since the festival is still a month away but for now, JLaw and RPattz are not going to Cannes.
As for Emma Stone, she’ll for sure be in play at some point this year in Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, for which she shaved her head. Bugonia was never expected to be ready for Cannes even though Yorgos’s last film Kinds of Kindness premiered there and Jesse Plemons was named Best Actor, but it’s scheduled to open in November so Venice seems more likely and that’s also where Poor Things had its world premiere.
Maybe both Emma and Jennifer will be in Venice together. It’s also possible – and I know, I know, it’s early – that both will be in awards contention next season. These two are very close, have been for years, and just yesterday they met up for dinner in New York, a girls night after Jennifer recently welcomed her second child. LOL JLaw’s coat, straight out of an Asian auntie’s closet.
