Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry are now the new most random entry into our celebrity summer of love 2025 – and, I’m sorry, if you’re a gossip, and I assume you are if you’re here, who is complaining about this?!

Anyway, for those of us who can readily admit that we are enjoying this show, we have more details about JT and KP in Montreal on Monday. TMZ initially broke the story about their dinner and they followed up with another report that before dinner, Justin and Katy actually went for a walk in the park for an hour and a half, with her dog, before hitting up the restaurant. According to TMZ, JT then dropped Katy off at the hotel for her to get ready for dinner.

But there’s more because I was just on the Commotion podcast with Elamin Abdelmahmoud and the other person on the panel was Justin Ling, a Montreal-based journalist, who added that Justin and Katy didn’t just walk around the park, they also spent time on the terrace – as Justin Ling said, this is basically a signature Montreal date.

Justin Ling also noted that when the reservation at Le Violon was made for dinner, apparently it was understood that the paparazzi would be there, that this would definitely not be a private occasion. And if these two were OK with it, well then presumably they were anticipating whatever would follow, maybe even welcome it. Not that they would ever admit to it but these are two people with the resources to be able to do whatever they need to do in private, if they really want to. And they chose the other option.

Which… I’m not mad at it! Two people in their flop era getting together to un-flop themselves is a good move! Yesterday was the best press day both Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry have had in a while. And I say this with no political motivation. I don’t hate Justin Trudeau, I’ve known him for a long time (Sophie Grégoire is a former colleague), but the fact of the matter is that he hasn’t had a great year, or years. No matter your political affiliation, this point is undeniable. Making headlines for possibly dating a popstar is a pivot he can afford right now.

And being the student of pop culture that Justin is, he 100% would understand the reaction. He and Katy are basically a Hallmark rom-com: single former head of state romances an increasingly irrelevant popstar is a script we could have seen coming and somehow didn’t.

Katy performs tonight in Montreal – will he or won’t he show up?
