Sarah Pidgeon was in the gossip a few days ago when Joe Alwyn was seen hanging out in NYC with Mary Beth Barone. They went to a few bars, no actual evidence that it was more than friendly, except at one point when she was seen wearing his ballcap which is kinda flirty, IMO, because I’m not putting anyone’s hat on my head unless I know them like that or I’m trying to know them like that. Maybe it’s just me and my own … issues… but, like, hats smell scalpy. I wash my hair every day and my hats still have my scalpy smell in them because hats can be tricky to wash. I can barely stand my own scalp smell, so there is no way I’m here to smell anyone else’s unless I’ve smelled them in other ways. That doesn’t necessarily mean that Mary Beth and Joe are f-cking, it’s just – again in my opinion – a certain level of intimacy that could indicate something. (PS. I love Mary Beth, her Netflix special is good, and I’ve interviewed her before at JFL and she is the sweetest.)

The potential drama here, though, is that the last time we checked, Joe and Sarah Pidgeon were all over each other. And before we even had time to process whatever is or isn’t happening between him and Mary Beth, a civilian sent DeuxMoi an exclusive of him with Sarah Pidgeon the next day.

But today someone else sent in another shot of Joe and Mary Beth again – and now the word is they’re working on a project together that will start shooting in October.

So, presumably, he and Mary Beth are colleagues and he and Sarah are still dating. In other Sarah news, we just saw her at the Emmys last week where she probably had the best chance at a win from all the Love Story: John F Kennedy & Carolyn Bessette nominations – and she probably would have pulled it off if not for Sally Field who won for her performance in Remarkably Bright Creatures. I know people are saying that it’s Sally and she’s a legend but… like… if voters really did just vote based on status, Harrison Ford would have an Emmy by now. Sally is legit so good in that film. That movie made me feel some things I was not expecting to feel.

Sarah’s run as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy isn’t over yet though – the series is still eligible for Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and the SAG Awards and while there are other limited series still to premiere (like East of Eden) that might push Love Story down the ballot, her performance and the series is still culturally relevant and should have a presence on those events. Which is why I want to talk about her hair, because she had dark brown almost black hair until she was cast as CBK, and she’s been blonde ever since, understandably because it’s such a big part of the CBK look. Once this run is over though, will she go back to darker hair or will she stay blonde?

While we’re here though, on the point about how Love Story is still culturally relevant, it’s CBK really – who has never gone of out style but this year she’s been particularly on trend. Sarah’s Chanel dress at the Emmys, in violet, has been compared to CBK’s wedding dress.

But in retail, right on time, given that it’s been just over six months since Love Story was released, the CBK influence is everywhere, in tandem with the overall prep trend, like rugby shirts and polos and pleats, that’s been so dominant. There are a few statement signature pieces though that are particularly ubiquitous right now. And perhaps the most coveted wardrobe staple of the last year from the show is the rollneck sweater. Sarah wore it in white as CBK and now that it is actually rollneck sweater season in many parts of the world, so many brands have a rollneck sweater in their catalogue.

For range and budget, I’ve been looking to Gap for a few so-called CBK essentials. Just bought the CashSoft Oversized Rollneck Sweater which is currently 50% off in the oatmeal colourway. The rollneck isn’t as stiff as the one that Sarah wears on the show but that works better for me because a stiffer rollneck needs a thicker knit that’s often not as soft and I’m prone to skin irritation so the CashSoft at Gap achieves the rollneck effect but also feels SO good on the body and it hangs so well over jeans.

Speaking of hang, plus CBK, she was known for a black turtleneck. Turtlenecks have never been out of style for me, I love them. But I don’t tuck anything so I prefer a slouchy one that still holds shape and looks great over a pair of trousers or jeans or a skirt. And I’m obsessed with this 100% Cotton Oversized Mockneck Sweater but please do not be afraid that it’s mockneck. She falls from the shoulders like a beauty, the perfect go-to to throw on and go on any day from October to March.

Another CBK standard that’s an every girly standard is the fitted cardigan and a cable knit. I never wear fitted cardigans but I do wear zip-up sweaters and I love a cable knit so this was basically made for me, I could not get it into my cart fast enough. Gap’s 100% Cotton Cable-Knit Zip Cardigan comes with a hood, is gorgeously après-ski in white, well-priced at under $100, and it will never be off-trend.

And finally… we’ll probably be seeing a lot of people in brown corduroy pants through the fall and winter because, well, Carolyn’s were iconic.

It was that cognac colourway, worn lower on her hips with those big pockets. LL Bean’s Signature Utility Corduroy Pants are pretty close, like the shade is almost exact.

I prefer a barrel leg though and I have the Uniqlo Corduroy Barrel Leg Pants in dark brown that are under $50 and so comfortable.
