It’s Emily Blunt times two, as she stars in two of the most anticipated films of 2026, both of which got new trailers yesterday.

First up, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which continues to focus on vibes, fashion, and Miranda Priestly being beastly.

Simone Ashley! The Viscountess! Glad to see her thriving outside of Bridgerton. This might be controversial, but my favorite character in The Devil Wears Prada is Nigel, so I am most stoked to see Stanley Tucci back. It’s just that scene at the end, when Nigel doesn’t get the promotion he expects, and he realizes Miranda will never let him excel because she benefits by keeping him right where he is, and the look on his face, the way he just shoves it all down to maintain his composure…

That just hit so close to home, and in a movie that was so much about fantasy (mostly that you would be able to make a living as a writer post-2000), that moment was so real. People really do get sabotaged at work like that all time. I’m interested to see how Nigel is doing twenty years down the line. Also, Prada 2 is getting one of those elaborate collector popcorn buckets and…it’s actually rad. It’s a purse!

I live in a very small apartment and don’t really have room for collectibles, but damn, I want that. Putting the bag in popcorn bag!

The other most anticipated film Emily Blunt stars in is Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. The new trailer reveals more of the plot, in which Colin Firth plays an evil billionaire and Josh O’Connor is a whistleblower revealing aliens to the world. Emily Blunt and Eve Hewson are caught in the middle, somehow.

Because everything is terrible, all the worst film “fans” are arguing online about how this year is a clash of the titans as Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Denis Villeneuve all have new films coming out, and that Spielberg is somehow a loser who can’t compete with Nolan and Villeneuve. First of all, that’s not how any of this works. The kind of cinema that Villeneuve is making with Dune and Nolan makes with all his films was literally invented by Steven Spielberg. Cinema, like all art, is a mountain, not a plane. Each new work is built on the foundation laid by the previous work. Nolan and Villeneuve would be the FIRST to cite Spielberg among their influences.

But also, none of these movies are going head-to-head at the box office, there’s no reason to worry about box office totals unless you’re a joyless nerd who insists on sportifying art. There will be no “loser” unless you MAKE one, so just like, don’t make one. Ideally, all three films will succeed because that would be the best-case scenario for theatrical distribution. This does not have to be a zero-sum game; it SHOULDN’T be a zero-sum game. Can we just root for everyone to win? Because we actually do need that to keep getting big budget spectacle cinema. Christopher Nolan got to make The Odyssey because Oppenheimer made almost a billion dollars. If you must keep a tally, keep it in perspective. Success breeds more success. A rising tide lifts all boats.

I am deeply worried, though, that the sportification of cinema that has occurred over the last twenty-ish years will only get worse with prediction markets. You think the joyless nerds are bad now? Wait until they’ve got a mortgage payment riding on which makes more money, Dune 3 or Avengers 5. December is really going to be unbearable, as those two movies actually do come out on the same day. Thanks, I hate it.
