With the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League coming to HBO Max next year, director Zack Snyder is now dropping teasers of his previously unseen footage, beginning with a brief scene of Wonder Woman discovering Darkseid, the REAL villain of Justice League who barely got mentioned in the theatrical version, which featured Steppenwolf as its big bad. Really not saying this to throw gasoline on the flames of the fan war, just using it as shorthand for the non-comic book readers out there: Darkseid is basically DC’s Thanos. He’s a virtually unstoppable intergalactic threat bent on destroying hope and free will. He’s a cool villain! I don’t think he is going to fix anything about Justice League, but whatever. The people who crave the Snyder Cut won’t care and will love it.
At least we know Diana will have a little more to do in Snyder’s version than patch up Bruce Wayne’s many owies, though Snyder is very hit or miss in his treatment of Wonder Woman. On the one hand, he gave her that cool as hell introduction in Batman v Superman. On the other hand, he saddled her with a terrible character beat that she was so sad about her boyfriend dying she stood by and did nothing for 100 years of human suffering. I will be interested to see what Snyder’s original intention for Diana in Justice League was, especially since it seems her connection to mythology will matter when it comes to discovering Darkseid and his threat. I really don’t think it’s going to make the whole mother box plot less stupid, but I’m always here for Diana Prince doing some cool sh-t.
