Here in LA, rumours started circulating that Zendaya would be appearing at the Oscars just before the weekend, even though she was not on the Academy’s confirmed list of presenters. Law Roach pretty much confirmed it when on Saturday he posted a reel of her in Louis Vuitton with caption “The Nite Before” which is phrasing specifically associated with the Oscars in this town.

Let’s sidebar about Law for a minute though, because he walked the carpet last night and stopped at all the usual outlets, returning to the scene of his gossip crimes. It was two weeks ago that all hell broke loose when he said, multiple times, at the SAG Awards that we’d all missed Zendaya’s wedding, that it already happened, implying that she and Tom Holland were already married.

Law went in the opposite direction last night, because everyone was asking the same thing:

Several of his interviews on the red carpet were like this. With Extra though, he added something on the end: “I said what I said”.

Heidi is assuming that Law revealed that Z and Tom had a secret wedding by mistake. I don’t buy that it was a mistake, even though some people online are acting like he’s being coy like this because she gave him sh-t. As if he would ever be so sloppy about his most high-profile collaborator. And besides, how much more confirmation is necessary? She has been quite clearly photographed multiple times on different days wearing a gold band when a gold band isn’t the most obvious style option. And she was wearing it again last night at the Oscars, though she skipped the red carpet.

Zendaya was at the Oscars for two reasons, the most obvious being that, along with Robert Pattinson, it was to promote their film, The Drama. But she was also there as brand ambassador of Rolex, which is an official brand partner for the Oscars proper. A new commercial was released on the weekend, ahead of the Oscars, that worked as a career overview, tracking how she’s become, over the last decade, one of the biggest stars of her generation. The spot uses only archival footage, nothing new, accompanied by a voiceover – Zendaya herself talking through her ambition, a time capsule of her achievements, just as she’s about to kick off what could be the biggest year of her career, with five major projects due by the end of 2026, at which point she’ll be 30 years old.

Zendaya’s status in Hollywood and influence on pop culture is undeniable, but I was still surprised to see that the Academy had her and Robert Pattinson presenting Best Director. Any Oscar is major but the directing Oscar is mega major, usually reserved for previous Oscar winners. Neither Z nor Robert Pattinson have ever even been nominated. But this is how highly regarded Zendaya has become. No disrespect to Robert Pattinson but I have a hard time believing that if he weren’t paired with Zendaya he’d be up there giving Paul Thomas Anderson his first directing Oscar.

As for the look…

Custom Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière, a brown dress that Sarah immediately compared to another brown Giambattista Valli dress that Z wore to the Oscars in 2018. The Giamba is better but, to be fair, the 2026 LV is better in editorial than it was on the Oscars stage. Maybe it was how the dress seemed dull on that spectacular set, maybe it was that when she was presenting she didn’t really have a chance to put a pose on it, sell the look the way she’s capable of when she’s truly serving. Whatever the reason, it was just about the most unremarkable dress she’s ever worn.

But it looks a lot better when she’s playing to the dress’s strengths, working it the way she does best. And since she skipped the carpet, the only place we get to see that is on Law Roach’s socials.

This in itself is a flex. A custom Louis Vuitton – and she doesn’t even have to take it out for a ride on the red carpet.
