As I wrote in the open today, celebrities were doing the most on the red carpet in Venice this weekend. It was look after look after look. The last several days on the Lido have amounted to a case being made by celebrities for Celebrity. This is what movie stars do – they dress up, they dazzle.
But among all the stars, as spectacular as they all were, there was still a standout. A true super star. That would, of course, be Zendaya. As the kids say, she ate them up. She stepped on their necks. And she sent social media, as usual, into a frenzy. Particularly with her nude wet dress.
I felt this on Friday, even though I was trying not to look at my phone to detach for the weekend. But my phone was giving me the vibes – bitch, you DO NOT want to be missing this. And the phone was right. At the time I was in Duana’s backyard, gathered with our friends for late summer hang, and from all of us it was just a chorus of moans and groans, ecstasy and envy.
It’s just not fair, you know? Zendaya makes it unfair, not only for civilians like us but for other celebrities too. Who is going to step to her?!
And it wasn’t just one look either. You’ve seen the others, right?
If not, let Law Roach show you his work:
The cornrows with this dress… perfection:
And then, if you are still alive, Z and Law are about to put a stop to that.
Actually, it just doesn’t stop. Every time you think she tops it, Zendaya comes back again and takes your breath away.
Even Timothee Chalamet, who is not often overshadowed, understands his place. Although the combination of the two, both of these young stars, obviously attracting so much attention for Dune, and together, at the top of the class for the generation of Hollywood’s future. They’re 25 years old. They already have their own fully formed voices, both in the way the approach their work and in the way they present themselves. You can see why the studio must be thrilled that these are the two who’ll be carrying much of the marketing around this film. It’s a major bonus.
And, by the way, Timothee sparkled too.
PS. More on Zendaya’s British Vogue cover story in a separate post.
