Chris Pratt is arriving
As excited as I was for The Avengers, I’m even more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy. So far, I’m not even this excited for The Avengers 2, and it will star one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. Don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked for The Avengers 2. But Guardians is a different beast all together. It’s everything fun and great about comic book movies and Marvel movies in particular, plus Spaceballs. It’s the biggest risk Marvel has taken yet, and they’ve already taken some nut-crushingly big risks. Now, six months before its August release, we’ve got the first trailer from Guardians of the Galaxy.
This is not the best trailer Marvel has done, hobbled as it is by having to introduce a brand new team of heroes that includes a trigger-happy raccoon and a space ent, but it does manage to capture the humor and WTF-ness of the movie. This is a very funny, and very WTF, movie and the trailer is only scratching the surface of what’s available. We don’t get to hear from Rocket Raccoon at all, which is deliberate because he is a scene stealer and they’re going to want to save that comedic gold for closer to the actual release, and John C. Reilly is limited to exposition, but we do get a healthy dose of Chris Pratt as Peter “Star Lord” Quill.
Down to the smallest detail, I love everything about Pratt in this trailer. I love the Han Solo vibe, I love the quick look at him in his Star Lord helmet…
I love the delivery of every single line he says. It’s perfect, and it has the feel of a major break-out moment, a la Tom Hiddleston and Loki. Pratt is cute, talented and funny. He’s got an open, engaging personality (the element Sebastian Stan might be missing to put him over the top with the Winter Soldier), and it’s starting to feel like Pratt’s moment, what with being one of the best parts of Parks & Rec and coming off the success of The LEGO Movie. Hooked on a feeling, indeed—Chris Pratt is going to end the year a big fat movie star.
