Kristen Stewart in millennial pink

Millennial pink has been having a loooong moment. I read an article this week about the origins of millennial pink. Did you know that “millennial pink” is the most searched back-to-school phrase on Pinterest? Everyone will be wearing millennial pink when they go back to school in September.

So here’s Kristen Stewart, covering the September issue of UK Harper’s Bazaar, and the theme of the editorial appears to be millennial pink. She looks amazing in millennial pink. But, then again, with her hair so short now, and her face on full display like this, it’s hard to make her look bad. Kristen Stewart is one of those people, one of those people with That Face. Like Winona Ryder years before her. Winona has That Face. And Lupita Nyong’o has That Face. Faces that you almost need the hair to get out of the way because they’re so spectacular on their own.

Kristen is featured in the magazine to rep Chanel. She’s been affiliated with the label for a few years now. But she’s now the face of the new Chanel fragrance, Gabrielle. Beauty and style ambassadorship is a peculiar thing, especially for women and especially for fragrance. Fragrance is 100% connected to mood. And attitude. It’s more than just a scent, it’s who you want to be when you put on the scent. It’s who you are when you’re wearing the scent. Fragrances are marketed to personality. So, often, the personalities selling the fragrances have to get personal.

Over the last few years, we have seen Kristen Stewart getting more and more personal, getting more and more comfortable sharing more of herself. It happened when she started dating Alicia Cargile and she herself has acknowledged that that change in her personal life had a direct impact on her public life, because while she certainly doesn’t want to give everything away, she knew how important it would be for someone with her profile to not have to hide how she loves. As she tells Harper’s Bazaar, she loves hard:

"I've been deeply in love with everyone I've dated. Did you think I was faking it? I've always really embraced a duality. And really, truly, believed in it and never felt confused or struggling. I just didn't like getting made fun of."

That’s a secret message for her secret husband, Robert Pattinson, did you get it? For the rest of us, it’s Kristen addressing her bisexuality. She goes on to clarify, when asked if she would ever date another man:

"Yeah, totally. Definitely… Some people aren't like that. Some people know that they like grilled cheese and they'll eat it every day for the rest of their lives. I want to try everything. If I have grilled cheese once I'm like, 'That was cool, what's next?'"

I LOVE this quote. For the gossip. I love it because while she seems to be saying that she’s open to falling in love again with another guy, you could also apply that same “what’s next?” and “grilled cheese” approach to her love life over the last year. Grilled cheese doesn’t have to mean men. Or women. Grilled cheese might actually mean whoever’s right now.

Remember Kristen broke temporarily with Alicia Cargile for a month or so and was all up in Soko. After Soko it was back to Alicia. But then two months later she was with St Vincent. Two months after that, and still now, it’s been Stella Maxwell. All of that happened in the space of 8 months or so. So the “grilled cheese, what’s next” might not just be about her bisexuality, it could be about her sexuality, period.
