We’re doing more than one post today about the Golden Globe nominations but let’s start with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because this is their event. This is a group of 90 or so international journalists known for making odd choices – and not always bad. In the television categories, the Globes often recognise new series and talent well ahead of the Emmys which can get caught in a rut, awarding the same shows and people over and over and over again. Full Story

Dear Gossips,

It seems like most of Black Hollywood was in Atlanta this weekend for the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios. Oprah and Stedman walked the carpet together. Halle Berry and Whoopi Goldberg shared a moment on the red carpet.  Read Full Intro

There were three Oscar winners nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category. The other two have won SAG Awards and Golden Globes. Last night it was Jharrel Jerome who won the Emmy, making history, at 21 years old, as the youngest to win the category. It was the surprise of the night. Full Story

Here is what I do not understand about Ava Duvernay.  She shows up to every awards show, because she always has something excellent and nomination-worthy going on, not just because she wants to party. That in itself is something to be amazed by.   Then, of course, there’s the fact that she’s talented and fun and appears, from the outside, to have integrity: her guests on the carpet and at the ceremony were Antron McCay, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Korey Wise, and Yusef Salaam—otherwise known as ‘The Exonerated Five”, the subjects of the Emmy-nominated When They See Us. Full Story

Ava DuVernay: Team Chalamet?

Full disclosure: I’m just here to please in this post, total obsequiousness. Because I know how you feel about Timothee Chalamet. And you know what? Ava DuVernay feels the same way. Ava and Timmy were both at the Academy’s Governors Awards on Sunday and here’s what she posted about him afterwards, he made that much of an impression:  I like this person. Full Story

Strong Black Lead

Kathleen Posted by Kathleen at June 26, 2018 18:54:08 June 26, 2018 18:54:08

By now, you’ve probably seen Netflix’s Strong Black Lead short film. The spot is a recreation of the iconic 1958 photo “A Great Day in Harlem” but instead of legendary jazz musicians, Netflix brought together 47 black directors, producers, writers and actors. The promo has been dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood” and each of these black creatives work on Netflix originals. Full Story

It was everyone’s low-key worry, right? That after A Wrinkle in Time merely whelmed, Ava DuVernay would not get the same second (third, fourth, fifth) chance that her white male peers get to go on and make another blockbuster, like, say, Zack Snyder who made a divisive Superman movie and then went on to make two more divisive Superman movies. Full Story

It has been just over two weeks since I saw A Wrinkle in Time. It was a press screening, which usually means I’m sitting alone being extra all by myself. But this time, my best friend Liz –who works with Lainey at etalk – was sitting beside me. We laughed. We cried. We LIVED. We loved A Wrinkle in Time. Full Story

Show Your Work: “The Room Where It Happens”

Lainey Posted by Lainey at March 12, 2018 20:01:06 March 12, 2018 20:01:06

If you know Hamilton, you know where we took our inspiration for the title of this week’s episode of Show Your Work. We are not, however, talking about Hamilton. We are talking about rooms – the rooms where Hollywood decisions are made, the rooms where plans are laid, the rooms where we work. Full Story

Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time is an ambitious movie and its scope outstrips its narrative ability, resulting in an uneven but occasionally enthralling fantasy. Meg (Storm Reid, terrific) is introduced helping her father, Alex Murry (Chris Pine, terrific) in his lab. He’s doing an experiment with sand and frequencies, and talking about how finding just the right frequency can do…something. Full Story
