DAME Magazine just tweeted at several entertainment outlets about a new article they’ve posted re: whether or not Lisa Marie Presley has broken up with the Church of Scientology.
Speculation about Lisa Marie’s relationship to Xenu has been circulating for months. DAME is now publishing quotes that were previously unreleased that seem to suggest that she came to the realisation some time ago that David Miscavige was crooked and that it was time to go. The interview took place last year when she was promoting her album Storm & Grace. Though questions directly related to religion were not allowed, she spoke very candidly about the changes in her life that compelled her to move to England, hinting perhaps that the forces that drove her away were indeed coming from inside Sci:
“(I left after) Uncovering the fact that I was surrounded by people who were not well-intended, for one. Confidants [who were] very, very intimately and closely involved with me and my life. And had been for years. Basically, it was a big sinister situation, where there was like, kind of intel and covert ops going on, and a whole effort to control me that I didn’t know about.’
Did you know that Elvis once considered Scientology!??! And then thought better of it?!?
The DAME piece posits that Lisa Marie is reluctant to publicly announce her departure from the Church for fear of retribution. And there’s also the belief that leaving the Church would mean cutting off contact from family members. Apparently Priscilla Presley is still a devout parishioner.
If this is true, and it very much sounds like it is, well, it’s another public relations and financial hit for David Miscavige and Scientology. Katie Holmes blew that open last summer resulting in the Vanity Fair slam piece in the fall, detailing how Tom Cruise would audition his girlfriends, and what Katie Holmes may have been protecting Suri from. There followed news profile after news profile on mainstream networks effectively calling Scientology a cult and Miscavige an abusive dictator, subsequently confirmed in Lawrence Wright’s recent book alleging Miscavige’s excesses. To say nothing of the money loss. Lisa Marie is worth a LOT of money. Her contributions would not have been insubstantial.
And how does this affect Tom Cruise?
He did very little promotion for Jack Reacher. Oblivion is next in April. Not too far away. Needless to say, if he does open himself up to the media, they’ll restrict anyone from going anywhere near the Church question. But he remains the most prominent symbol of an organisation that is being taken apart, very publicly, but those who were once inside and those who’ve been wary of it from the outside for years.
They always say that all you need is one big hit and you’re back.
Tom Cruise will be putting that to the test.
