Jessica Chastain is the furthest thing from a sore loser. Did Laura Dern steal her Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars? Probably. But you could never tell by the look of Jessica's glowing smile on the Independent Spirit Awards red carpet.

What's not to love? She's a natural who doesn't take these honours too seriously, even though she's nominated at the Indie Spirits. Jessica works all the time, and shines in each role. Yet even though Lainey thinks she's in a bit of a style rut, I like this look. It's so nice to see her having fun.

Smiling, laughing and sporting a low-key black dress with lace sleeves and Piaget diamond earrings, Jessica gets what the Indie Spirits are all about: a laid-back and casual daytime event honouring independent film just over 24 hours before Hollywood goes wild on Oscar night. What better way to do that than on a beach in Santa Monica?

Here, Jessica serves just enough glamour, without being too high maintenance.

While chatting with Ben Lyons in the T-Mobile lounge, Jessica called out Ben for his "cheat sheet notes" then dropped "hashtag Chastainiac" (her Instagram handle) before saying "it's a maniac I guess."

Goofball! Later, she praised Patricia Arquette's turn in Boyhood, chatted about why it's great that the Indie Spirits recognize diversity in cinema, and joked that if she played Coretta Scott King it would be "like the worst casting ever."

And as for A Most Violent Year and teaming up with her Juilliard classmate Oscar Isaac?

"Every day, we're like dude, we're making a movie!"
