There is nothing more frustrating than a movie that wastes a good premise AND a good cast: Welcome to The Kitchen, the most frustrating movie of 2019 (so far). Adapted from a comic book by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, The Kitchen is the directorial debut of screenwriter Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), and it stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss. Full Story

Here’s Melissa McCarthy arriving at the Billie Eilish show last night in LA in a great outfit. An excellent concert outfit. This jacket in particular.  It’s the patched cargo jacket from her own clothing line, Seven7. It’s from a few season ago but if they’re listening, they should make this an every season release because it’s a classic. Full Story

Melissa McCarthy wants our poor, unfortunate souls

Late Friday, Variety reported that Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula in the inevitable Disney live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. This is the only Disney live-action remake I actually care about because I LOVE The Little Mermaid. I loved mermaids so much as a kid I used to sit on the bottom of the pool, convinced if I stayed in the water long enough, I would turn into one. Full Story

I wanted to be annoyed.  Melissa McCarthy was the long-shot nominee for a fantastic performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me, and even though I knew, and you knew, and she knew, that it was never going to happen, I wanted more people to treat it like it was a possibility.  She was wearing a really incredible… ‘ensemble’ is the only word, because it wasn’t a dress, and calling it a jumpsuit neglects the incredible cape that fit perfectly over her shoulders and looked rich. Full Story

Melissa McCarthy’s Ironic Oscar Nom

Maybe the title above isn’t fair. Melissa McCarthy got an Oscar Best Actress nomination for playing Lee Israel, an irascible crank in her 50s who pulled off an incredible scam, and Can You Ever Forgive Me is completely worth your time. The nomination is completely deserved and also kind of surprising, since the movie and its buzz faded in the last few weeks, and because McCarthy has been a relatively quiet contender in the Best Actress categories at the Globes/Critics/SAGs – although that may change now?  The irony, though, comes because McCarthy plays not just an unlikeable woman, but a woman who’s trying – and failing – to get acknowledgement for her work, and it’s consistently not working. Full Story

Melissa McCarthy at her best in Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Sarah Posted by Sarah at October 19, 2018 14:21:17 October 19, 2018 14:21:17

Melissa McCarthy is best known as a comedienne, but really she’s a good actress with a talent for playing cranks and borderline unpleasant, blunt characters. She excels when she’s playing someone who says and does as she pleases, so Can You Ever Forgive Me? is right up her alley. Marielle Heller’s second feature adapts Lee Israel’s memoir (from a script by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty), recounting her days as a literary forger. Full Story

Happytime Murders is aggressively mediocre

Sarah Posted by Sarah at August 24, 2018 16:08:05 August 24, 2018 16:08:05

You may have heard that The Happytime Murders, the R-rated puppet noir starring Melissa McCarthy, is getting hammered with bad reviews. It’s currently standing at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s the worst movie of the year or it’s the worst movie ever, depending on who you ask. Full Story
