A New Year’s gift from the Monaco royals…

It’s Prince Albert, with Serene Charlene, and their twins, Jacques and Gabriella, in a rare joint interview about their first year as parents. And, I think?, this is supposed to be their relatable side? I mean otherwise the palace wouldn’t have released it, right? They must think that the video portrait presented here offers the public an intimate and informal glimpse into their lives, and the goal, ostensibly, is for us to be charmed, warmed, won over.

Instead, I just have more questions. Because for most of it, these are two people having two completely different conversations. There are times I’m not sure she’s even bothering acknowledging that he’s there. The few times she does glance at him, she follows it up with a grimace, almost as through she’d been trying to forget she was sitting beside him and was jarred by the reminder. Certainly it’s probably awkward being royal and proper and still manage to convey a sense of natural comfort but to me, when I hear her speak about raising the children, about their choices as they become adults, it sounds like a declaration and then, like a warning. As he sits there, either completely oblivious, or trying to cover it all up with his boring monologue, I can’t decide. But watch, and tell me, where is the chemistry?
