Dear Gossips,

We survived Taylor Swift’s wedding march, and now we’re onto the next great gossip banquet, as Maria dubbed it, which is: Why Are Harry & Meghan Really Moving Back to the UK?

Speculation is rampant—Meghan is returning to acting but no wait she’s been “dropped from consideration” for Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen, something that was never confirmed to even be real, they might be “private royals-plus”, they might only be staying in the UK for a year.

The only thing that IS for sure is that this is a gift for gossip. Never-ending possibilities, wild speculation, divisive personalities who cause fights on the internet, the gossip gods are DINING OUT on this. But let’s think about this like Taylor Swift’s wedding. When rumors that Taylor was going to get married in Madison Square Garden started circulating, I didn’t believe it because, well, it was tacky. With all her resources, everything she could do with those resources, and she chooses…Billy Joel’s second home?

But she did it because MSG made sense in a lot of Taylor-specific ways. It was an environment she could control completely but also allowed her to Be Spectated, she loves the venue, apparently, and has historical connections to it. Something something athletes and the Garden as a venue of champions, TNT love to win. Through a specific, Taylor-focused lens, the MSG wedding did compute. So, let’s look at Harry & Meghan’s Big Move through a Sussex-specific lens. Not in the fan sense, but how does this move make sense to Harry & Meghan that might not make sense to us?

Well, besides the obvious and sad speculation that perhaps Charles isn’t doing as well as believed—which might dovetail with the report that their move will be of a shorter duration—the number one thing I can think of is school. It’s back to school season, which got me thinking about it. Specifically, I live in an area with not only prominent public schools, but also one of the most expensive private schools in the city. And seeing the buses at the public school and the line of black SUVs picking up from the private school got me thinking about how education shapes so much of who we are.

Even more specifically, so much of class is transmitted through schooling. Going to the “right” school can be a cheat code at life. It’s not just the connections you make; it’s all the social skills and cues you pick up by osmosis. If Harry & Meghan want Archie and Lilibet to be “real” royals, in the sense that they can mix and mingle in that world, then schooling is going to matter. Archie is seven, he’s a first grader, Lilibet would be starting kindergarten in the US. Now is the time to move and enroll them in UK schools, if Harry & Meghan want their kids to grow up alongside the kids of peers, the uber rich, and their royal cousins.

This is just one reason that makes sense through a certain lens. It is currently topping my leaderboard for Why Is This Even Happening, mainly because I don’t want to bet on someone being ill, but also because maybe Harry & Meghan decided they want their kids to have some of their Britishness restored. To some people, they will never be British enough, but schooling their kids in the UK ingratiates them into that strict class system, in a way just having a title doesn’t. The gossip banquet is in full swing, and I’m trying not to get lost in the waves of competing headlines, all citing mysterious “sources”. Harry & Meghan haven’t actually offered anything, no more than Taylor Swift did before her wedding. What’s the “MSG wedding” explanation of Harry & Meghan’s big move for you?

Live long and gossip,

Sarah
