The Vogue Forces of Fashion event happened yesterday – it’s a fashion conference where industry players are invited to Vogue to talk about their experiences and how they’ll either help shape the future of the industry and/or what they hope to see out of it. This year Victoria Beckham was invited to participate in a chat with Anna Wintour herself. Well look how far we’ve come.
Anna, as we know, doesn’t just co-sign anyone. And back in the day, when Victoria was trying to be a fashion girl, there was the sense that Anna… well… made her work for it. Fast forward to the present, after years of relentlessly working on her brand, Victoria has proven a lot of people wrong, and earned Anna’s support, as evidenced by Anna’s response to a story that Victoria told during their conversation about being dressed by Donatella Versace over two decades ago.
“…recalling a moment when designer Donatella Versace called her up to have attend her show in Milan. Not only did Donatella set Beckham up with a private plane to escort her to Milan from London (which by the way, Victoria, pointed out, was her first-ever private plane moment), but she also had a personal audience with the designer, who dressed her for the show. “I put the clothes on and said I liked it, but “how about we change the length?” Beckham recalled. “I completely redesigned the outfit, I can’t believe I had the audacity to do that. I liked the outfit and it was coming from such a sweet, innocent place but when I look back I think, how could I have ever said that to Donatella?” Wintour reassured her that Donatella probably appreciated her humor and honesty.”
Anna “reassured her”…? Anna Wintour’s “reassurance” doesn’t come easily, I feel like she probably hoards it, so you can imagine what that signals to the industry. And by the way, this was in front of an audience. It’s a fashion summit, there were other moderates – for Anna to agree to moderate Victoria’s panel and publicly “reassure” her… definitely newsworthy to those of us who’ve been following Victoria’s fashion trajectory.
David was also at the event with Victoria and Anna mentioned the success of the Beckham docuseries last year on Netflix, leading into the new doc that Victoria is currently filming about building her brand. Per Vogue:
“Wintour, certain that this series will also be a hit like Beckham one suggested that a feature biopic about Victoria and David could be next on the to-do list for the famous couple. Wintour’s dream cast includes Margaret Qualley taking on the leading lady role of playing Victoria, while Joe Alwyn would play David.”
There it is again, another vote of confidence for Victoria from a person whose approval she’s been seeking for so long. And Anna’s even dream-casting the biopic! Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn as Victoria and David? No offence to Anna but her choices kinda lack imagination.
My suggestion for Victoria would be Keira Knightley? From Bend It Like Beckham to Victoria Beckham, baby! Come on!
As for David?
Sarah just mentioned him today: Nicholas Hoult.
