Rami Malek and striped shorts

There were parts of the internet that were obsessed last week with photos of Rami Malek and his twin brother Sami walking around London. It’s the twin thing. People have always been fascinated by twins, especially identical twins. Duana, for example, has an unofficial PhD in twins, like she could probably write an academic paper. Anyway, that’s why Rami was viral last week. And he’s still walking around London with Sami this week.

In other news he’ll likely be heading to TIFF in September for the North American premiere of The Man I Love, directed by Ira Sachs. It first screened in Cannes and also stars Tom Sturridge, Luther Ford, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Rebecca Hall.

Now… can we talk about Rami’s shorts? It’s peak summer, I’ve been very into shorts this summer, more than usual because the shorts have been so good, very on trend, so much so that retailers can’t keep them in stock. It’s almost end of season though so there are some good deals for shorts. And I’m not talking about denim cutoff shorts, I mean striped shorts, linen shorts, comfortable shorts that also work as part of a cute outfit.

Rami’s shorts are Bode but from a previous season. Still, they always have a good selection of shorts, like these satin ones inspired by gym shorts from the 60s. Bode is expensive though – I’m happy for you if you can do it but almost $800 for shorts is crazy. 

Here are the shorts that I’ve been rotating through all summer, and I’m trying not to think about how there’s only a month left of summer because, honestly I love them all so much.

My answer to Rami’s satin is terry cotton – Left on Friday’s Towel To Go Short with a stripe down the side, reminds of me of camp shorts, even though I never went to camp, and the yellow is so bright and fun. And my god they are comfortable.

Same goes for the Roots Summer League Sweatshort. I just wore them to walk the dogs around the block yesterday, they’re under $50 right now and sizes are running out in the green colourway which is what I have, but the baby blue is retro and adorable.

Let me take a break right now from the sporty shorts and show you my favourite pair of work to play to brunch summer shorts of the moment: the Clara Silk Bermuda Short at Reformation. Bermuda shorts in length, but they feel like a slip, but you don’t have to worry about flashing anyone PLUS the lingerie trend of 2026 with the lace trim! They are so comfortable, they feel like air, and they work with everything: an oversize tee, a linen shirt, a denim shirt, band merch, a hoodie, whatever I’ve done it all. 

But Reformation also has a striped short, with an elastic waistband. The Theo Low Rise 2.5 Pull On Denim Shorts come in two colourways and they are cozy. I got them one size up and they’re so convenient, especially when you’re in a lazy mood and don’t want to f-ck around with jean shorts and buttons etc.

Zara has a pair with the same energy, not in denim but poplin. The Striped Poplin Shorts come in green and pink, with a slight flare and they’re a bit longer in the back. I also sized up with these – and they’re under $40. So good to quickly throw on over swimwear.

Which also applies to the Parasol Stripe Chambray Short at Simons. The blue and white stripe is classic, they’ll work any summer, and I kick around in these a lot. Right now they’re my favourite grocery store outfit under a sloppy white button-down.

Lately I feel like it’s 2007 all over again because I’ve been seeing so much Mavi. They have a pair of Mini Shorts in adorable and red and white with a matching shirt.

If you want to go slighttttllyyy fancier, H&M’s Linen-Blend Paper-Bag Shorts are gathered at the waist, in three fresh colourways, under $30. I wore these for an interview on ETALK under a white mesh sweater with a French tuck and it felt like I was on holiday at work.

And I also recently tried on the Gap Organic Cotton Poplin Stripe Boxer Shorts that sound like they’re too casual but they’re not because of the three exposed buttons. I had these on with a slouchy blazer, white socks, and loafers and spent the rest of the day and the next in them because it was such a good uniform.

Finally, my favourite recent discovery though probably a lot of other people have been onto this brand for a while but I found them last weekend in Vancouver and cannot get enough. It’s an Australian label called Locolinen and one of their most popular products is the Linen Short. I got them in checked forest green, with the two mint green stripes down the sides. The stockists keep saying they can’t keep these on the shelves and I believe it, because I am so obsessed, I want them in every possible colourway.
