Checking back on my Oscar predictions and I didn’t do that poorly. I had Kieran Culkin and Adrien Brody, but lost on Demi (come ON, that was a stinger) and Zoë Saldaña and Best Original Song. I’m shocked Emilia Pérez took home any awards not because of Karla Sofía Gascón but because it was so widely panned. The Crash of its year, minus the big win.
Also, I agree with Lainey, Zoë was also my best dressed.
If you haven’t read Duana’s analysis of Kieran Culkin’s speech, it’s like a warm hug for people who slightly side-eye things Twitter loves a little too much. And the RDJ Jr little tap dance was great because in real, actual life he is great friends with Jeremy Strong. Robert is the one who described Jeremy’s process as “hugging the cactus”.
Back to Kiernan, who will always be her slime puppy.

Peter Krause’s wide-eyed walk through the spirit tunnel at The Jennifer Hudson Show is probably what many of us would do in the same situation. He’s smiling and he’s making an effort but he’s not faking like he’s cool enough for it. Not everyone can shimmy down a hallway and make it look natural. Kind of endearing!

“The Academy made their decision” is the new “it is what it is.” Wistful but accepting of one’s fate.
The Academy made their decision. Congratulations Adrien.

If you can, fashion critic Rachel Tashjian wrote about the red carpet and how we are seeing a kind of claustrophobic “outrageous drive for perfection” that is unsettling. It feels like society’s obsession with optimization has taken over every facet of life, from grocery shopping to waist training, and influencing the way women are styled on the red carpet. I thought it was a fascinating read and not one without some uncomfortable points. As Tashjian writes, we know what we are seeing isn’t real but we don’t have the language to discuss it in a meaningful way.
